What it actually does
Null pointer dereference during destroy_workqueue call when unloading the mtk-jpeg kernel module, caused by a workqueue not being destroyed after a refactor in mtk_jpeg_core.c.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic or system crash occurs on module unload for MediaTek JPEG hardware, leading to downtime and instability on affected Linux devices; low urgency given minimal exploitation trends and no ransomware use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers module removal (e.g., via modprobe -r), causing the mtk_jpegdec_destroy_workqueue path to invoke destroy_workqueue on a null pointer introduced by the prior refactor, resulting in KASAN-detected paging fault and kernel crash.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix in commit 0ba08c21c6a92e6512e73644555120427c9a49d4 or equivalent stable kernel update that moves workqueue destruction into mtk_jpeg_core.c; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patch adds the missing destroy_workqueue call in mtk_jpeg_core.c, then test rmmod/modprobe -r of the module without triggering a null-ptr-deref oops or KASAN report.
Typical attack path
- Gain local shell or module management privileges on a vulnerable kernel
- Unload the mtk_jpeg_dec_hw or related module
- Trigger devres release and workqueue destruction path
- Crash the kernel via null dereference
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for call traces containing destroy_workqueue, mtk_jpegdec_destroy_workqueue, devm_action_release, and null pointer dereference during module unload events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on MediaTek-based systems within standard patch cycles
- Restrict unprivileged module loading/unloading via kernel module signing and capabilities
- Include kernel oops logs mentioning mtk_jpegdec_destroy_workqueue in monitoring rules

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: mtk-jpeg: Fix null-ptr-deref during unload module The workqueue should be destroyed in mtk_jpeg_core.c since commit 09aea13ecf6f ("media: mtk-jpeg: refactor some variables"), otherwise the below calltrace can be easily triggered.
