What it actually does
The vulnerability permitted UVC entities to be allocated with a zero or duplicate unique ID, violating the UVC specification and allowing self-referential entity chains or invalid source ID lookups that triggered warnings and failed pad link creation in the media controller subsystem.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using USB video capture devices may experience kernel warnings or instability during device enumeration, potentially disrupting video functionality on Debian-based deployments until the kernel is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a crafted UVC descriptor via a malicious or emulated USB device; during uvc_probe the driver registers entities without validating non-zero unique IDs, leading to cycles or zero-ID references that cause media_create_pad_link to fail and emit warnings.
How to fix it
Upgrade the linux package on Debian 12 to version 6.1.123-1 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel to enforce non-zero unique IDs during entity allocation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify running kernel version is at least 6.1.123-1; attempt to attach a device with a zero-ID entity descriptor and confirm absence of media_create_pad_link warnings in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Craft a USB device descriptor containing UVC units or terminals with bUnitID or bTerminalID set to zero or duplicates
- Connect the device to trigger usb_hub_wq and uvc_probe
- Reach uvc_mc_register_entities which calls media_create_pad_link on invalid entities
- Trigger kernel warnings or incomplete media graph registration
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for strings indicating uninitialized entity types or media_create_pad_link failures during uvc_probe and uvc_mc_register_entities; correlate with new high-speed USB device attachments.
- Entity type for entity Output 1 was not initialized!
- Entity type for entity Input 1 was not initialized!
- media_create_pad_link+0x2c4/0x2e0
- uvc_mc_register_entities+0x358/0x400
- uvc_register_chains+0x1fd/0x290
What your security team should do
- Apply the 6.1.123-1 kernel update across all Debian 12 systems within the next maintenance window
- Restrict untrusted USB devices until patching is complete
- Add kernel log monitoring for uvcvideo and media controller warnings
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: uvcvideo: Require entities to have a non-zero unique ID Per UVC 1.1+ specification 3.7.2, units and terminals must have a non-zero unique ID. ``` Each Unit and Terminal within the video function is assigned a unique identification number, the Unit ID (UID) or Terminal ID (TID), contained in the bUnitID or bTerminalID field of the descriptor. The value 0x00 is reserved for undefined ID, ``` So, deny allocating an entity with ID 0 or an ID that belongs to a unit that is already added to the list of entities. This also prevents some syzkaller reproducers from triggering warnings due to a chain of entities referring to themselves. In one particular case, an Output Unit is connected to an Input Unit, both with the same ID of 1. But when looking up for the source ID of the Output Unit, that same entity is found instead of the input entity, which leads to such warnings. In another case, a backward chain was considered finished as the source ID was 0. Later on, that entity was found, but its pads were not valid. Here is a sample stack trace for one of those cases.
