What it actually does
Improper sanitization of PUSH_REPLY messages allows injection of arbitrary data into third-party executables or plug-ins that process OpenVPN client messages.
Why it matters to the business
Potential compromise of systems using VPN clients with integrated plugins or external tools, risking unauthorized code execution or data manipulation in connected environments; low urgency given absence from known exploitation lists and stable low exploitation probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sets up or compromises an OpenVPN server and sends crafted PUSH_REPLY messages containing unexpected data; when a vulnerable client connects, the unsanitized content is passed to third-party executables or plug-ins, enabling injection attacks.
How to fix it
Upgrade OpenVPN to version 2.6.11 or later using the fixed commit ddf6bf6d2a13583535c417532e96e8a8af77f977; update affected Ubuntu Jython packages to 2.5.3-1ubuntu0.1 or 2.5.3-9ubuntu0.1 where applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm OpenVPN version is at least 2.6.11 and verify the presence of the sanitization fix in source or binary; test by sending sample PUSH_REPLY messages and checking for proper rejection of unexpected data.
Typical attack path
- Gain control of an OpenVPN server or MITM the connection
- Configure the server to emit malicious PUSH_REPLY messages
- Wait for vulnerable clients to connect and process the messages
- Trigger injection into target third-party components
How to detect it
Review OpenVPN client logs for unexpected PUSH_REPLY content or plugin errors following connections; monitor third-party executables for anomalous behavior after VPN sessions.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all OpenVPN installations to the fixed version
- Audit and restrict third-party plugins that consume PUSH_REPLY data
- Implement network segmentation for VPN clients until patched
The record
OpenVPN before 2.6.11 does not santize PUSH_REPLY messages properly which attackers can use to inject unexpected arbitrary data into third-party executables or plug-ins.
