What it actually does
Potential deadlock from circular locking dependency between sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH and hdev->lock during iso_sock_recvmsg and iso_conn_big_sync in Bluetooth ISO socket handling.
Why it matters to the business
Bluetooth ISO operations on affected Linux kernels may trigger kernel deadlocks, causing system hangs, loss of Bluetooth audio or data connectivity, and requiring reboots that disrupt user devices and services.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or local process triggers concurrent ISO socket operations such as accept, listen, recvmsg, and read while Bluetooth device locks are acquired, forcing the kernel into the documented unsafe locking order that results in deadlock.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix in commit adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a or later; rebuild and deploy updated Linux kernel images containing the reworked iso_sock_recvmsg logic that releases the socket lock before acquiring hdev lock.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of commit adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a in the kernel tree; run iso-tester or similar Bluetooth ISO concurrency tests and verify absence of circular locking warnings in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Establish or accept an ISO Bluetooth socket
- Perform concurrent recvmsg or read operations while device lock contention occurs
- Trigger iso_conn_big_sync under held socket lock
- Reach deadlock state between socket and hdev locks
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for circular locking dependency warnings referencing sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH, sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH-BTPROTO_ISO, hdev->lock, iso_conn_big_sync, and iso_sock_recvmsg; inspect for hung Bluetooth processes or deadlocked kernel threads.
- WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing the referenced commit for all systems using Bluetooth ISO
- Monitor kernel logs for circular locking warnings involving sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH and hdev->lock
- Disable Bluetooth ISO support where not required until patched kernels are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: iso: Fix circular lock in iso_conn_big_sync This fixes the circular locking dependency warning below, by reworking iso_sock_recvmsg, to ensure that the socket lock is always released before calling a function that locks hdev.
