What it actually does
Incorrect lock ordering in queue_attr_store where the queue is frozen via q_usage_counter before acquiring sysfs_lock, violating the expected acquisition sequence and creating a circular dependency involving debugfs_mutex, i_mutex, mmap_lock, and invalidate_lock.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel deadlocks or lockdep warnings can occur during normal sysfs access to block device attributes on storage subsystems, leading to system hangs, reduced availability, and operational instability on Linux hosts; widespread impact due to high ecosystem prevalence in Debian-based distributions.
How an attack unfolds
Any process performing directory listings or writes against /sys/kernel/debug or block queue sysfs entries triggers the reversed lock sequence; concurrent I/O or file operations that already hold mapping or filesystem locks then cause the deadlock chain to form, as shown in reproducible lockdep splats during kernel initialization and runtime attribute stores.
How to fix it
Upgrade the linux package on Debian 13 to version 6.12.8-1 or later; apply the upstream fix that reverses the freeze and sysfs_lock acquisition order in queue_attr_store.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm running kernel version is at least 6.12.8-1; re-execute ls against /sys/kernel/debug and verify absence of the described lockdep splat involving sysfs_lock and q_usage_counter; inspect dmesg for resolved circular dependency warnings.
Typical attack path
- Invoke ls or similar on /sys/kernel/debug or block device sysfs paths
- queue_attr_store freezes the queue via q_usage_counter
- sysfs_lock acquisition occurs after the freeze, inverting the documented order
- Concurrent operations hold debugfs_mutex, i_mutex, or mmap_lock creating circular wait
- Kernel reports lockdep warning or enters deadlock state affecting storage and memory paths
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for the lockdep warning strings mentioning sysfs_lock, q_usage_counter, queue_attr_store, and circular dependency chains involving debugfs_mutex or i_mutex; inspect for repeated WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected entries during sysfs writes or directory iteration on block queues.
- WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected
- queue_attr_store+0x9c/0x110
- &q->sysfs_lock
- &q->q_usage_counter(io)
- blk_register_queue+0xec/0x294
- ls/.* is trying to acquire lock
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule kernel upgrades to 6.12.8-1 across all Debian 13 systems
- Monitor dmesg and kernel logs for lockdep warnings related to queue freezing
- Test storage subsystem workloads after patching to confirm deadlock resolution
- Prioritize patching on systems with heavy block device attribute access or debugfs usage
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: Fix potential deadlock while freezing queue and acquiring sysfs_lock For storing a value to a queue attribute, the queue_attr_store function first freezes the queue (->q_usage_counter(io)) and then acquire ->sysfs_lock. This seems not correct as the usual ordering should be to acquire ->sysfs_lock before freezing the queue. This incorrect ordering causes the following lockdep splat which we are able to reproduce always simply by accessing /sys/kernel/debug file using ls command: [ 57.597146] WARNING: possible circular locking dependency detected [ 57.597154] 6.12.0-10553-gb86545e02e8c #20 Tainted: G W [ 57.597162] ------------------------------------------------------ [ 57.597168] ls/4605 is trying to acquire lock: [ 57.597176] c00000003eb56710 (&mm->mmap_lock){++++}-{4:4}, at: __might_fault+0x58/0xc0 [ 57.597200] but task is already holding lock: [ 57.597207] c0000018e27c6810 (&sb->s_type->i_mutex_key#3){++++}-{4:4}, at: iterate_dir+0x94/0x1d4 [ 57.597226] which lock already depends on the new lock.
