What it actually does
Use-after-free in device_for_each_child caused by device_unregister calling reparenting after the parent HCI device kobject reference count allows deletion, leaving a dangling pointer to freed memory during pm_runtime_set_memalloc_noio and netdev unregister paths.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or potential privilege escalation on Linux systems handling Bluetooth connections, leading to denial of service, system instability, and possible remote code execution in affected environments; urgency is moderate given low EPSS and no KEV status but high prevalence of the Linux kernel.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers Bluetooth device creation and teardown sequences via vhci or bnep interfaces that cause concurrent hci_conn_del_sysfs and parent device deletion, resulting in delayed reparenting and subsequent access to freed memory during device_for_each_child traversal.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix from commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be which explicitly reparents to NULL in hci_conn_del_sysfs before device_unregister; rebuild and deploy updated Linux kernel packages containing this commit.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be is present in the running kernel source; reproduce the original KASAN splat scenario with bnep and vhci workloads to confirm absence of use-after-free.
Typical attack path
- Create virtual HCI device via vhci_write
- Establish BNEP session triggering hci_alloc_dev_priv
- Initiate device unregister and hci_release_dev paths
- Force parent hciX deletion while child references remain
- Trigger device_for_each_child to read from freed slab memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for device_for_each_child crashes involving kbnepd, bnep_session, hci_release_dev, or netdev_unregister_kobject; correlate with vhci or Bluetooth session teardown events.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing commit 8fe28cb58bcb235034b64cbbb7550a8a43fd88be across all Linux distributions
- Monitor for Bluetooth-related kernel oops or KASAN reports in production workloads
- Disable unnecessary Bluetooth kernel modules where feasible until patched
- Review EPSS trend and threat actor reports on similar Linux kernel UAF issues for context

This means that reparenting (happened when the device is actually freed) is delayed and, during that delay, parent controller device (hciX) may be deleted. Since the latter may create a dangling pointer to freed parent, avoid that scenario by reparenting to NULL explicitly.
