What it actually does

Inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests allows request smuggling that bypasses ACL checks, enabling access to restricted paths and exposure of sensitive information.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may obtain sensitive data through unauthorized path access, increasing breach risk; low exploitation likelihood reduces immediate urgency despite the flaw's presence in widely used proxy software.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends crafted HTTP requests that HAProxy and the backend interpret differently, smuggling a second request past ACL restrictions to reach protected resources and exfiltrate data.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected HAProxy installations to a version that resolves the inconsistent request parsing; for listed packages apply optipng (Ubuntu:14.04:LTS) fixed in 0.6.4-1ubuntu0.14.04.1.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm updated package versions are deployed, review proxy configuration for ACL coverage, and test that previously bypassable paths now enforce restrictions.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify HAProxy instance with ACL-protected paths
  2. Craft HTTP request containing smuggling payload
  3. Send request to proxy
  4. Bypass ACL to reach restricted path
  5. Access and exfiltrate sensitive information

How to detect it

Review proxy access logs for requests that reach protected paths without prior authorization, look for unusual HTTP header patterns or duplicate requests, and correlate with backend access that bypasses expected ACL enforcement.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed versions immediately on all affected systems
  • Audit HAProxy configurations for ACL-protected endpoints
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for changes in exploit availability
  • Implement request normalization or additional WAF rules as a compensating control

The record

Inconsistent interpretation of HTTP requests ('HTTP Request/Response Smuggling') issue exists in HAProxy. If this vulnerability is exploited, a remote attacker may access a path that is restricted by ACL (Access Control List) set on the product. As a result, the attacker may obtain sensitive information.
