What it actually does
Causes a kernel NULL pointer dereference panic in br_netfilter during fragmentation checks in br_nf_dev_queue_xmit when untagged frames exceeding VxLAN MTU are forwarded through a bridge port configured as a single-vxlan-device, due to skb_dst being replaced with a metadata dst lacking a valid dev pointer.
Why it matters to the business
Leads to system crashes and denial of service on Linux hosts running bridged VxLAN configurations with netfilter bridge hooks enabled, disrupting network services in virtualized and containerized environments where this kernel module sees widespread use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local network access crafts or forwards oversized untagged frames into a bridge with a VxLAN port under the required conditions (br_netfilter loaded and bridge-nf-call-iptables enabled), triggering the panic path in ip_skb_dst_mtu after br_handle_egress_vlan_tunnel alters the skb destination.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit f07131239a76cc10d5e82c19d91f53cb55727297 or later; as a temporary mitigation disable br_netfilter or set net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables to 0 when VxLAN bridge ports are in use.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel includes the referenced commit or a backport; reproduce the described bridge and VxLAN topology with oversized untagged frames and confirm absence of the NULL dereference oops in br_nf_dev_queue_xmit.
Typical attack path
- Ensure target runs vulnerable kernel with br_netfilter and bridge-nf-call-iptables=1
- Attach a single-vxlan-device as a bridge port
- Send or flood untagged frames larger than the VxLAN device MTU toward the bridge
- Trigger br_nf_dev_queue_xmit fragmentation logic to dereference invalid dst metadata
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops traces containing br_nf_dev_queue_xmit, br_netfilter, vxlan, and NULL pointer dereference at address 0000000000000110; correlate with bridge port configurations and large untagged frame forwarding events.

- Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000110
- Modules linked in: vxlan ip6_udp_tunnel udp_tunnel veth br_netfilter bridge

What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel fix containing f07131239a76cc10d5e82c19d91f53cb55727297 immediately on all affected systems
- Audit bridge configurations for single-vxlan-device usage combined with br_netfilter
- Monitor kernel logs for oops entries referencing br_nf_dev_queue_xmit and vxlan
- Consider network-level MTU enforcement or packet size limits as defense-in-depth
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: br_netfilter: fix panic with metadata_dst skb Fix a kernel panic in the br_netfilter module when sending untagged traffic via a VxLAN device. This happens during the check for fragmentation in br_nf_dev_queue_xmit. It is dependent on: 1) the br_netfilter module being loaded; 2) net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables set to 1; 3) a bridge with a VxLAN (single-vxlan-device) netdevice as a bridge port; 4) untagged frames with size higher than the VxLAN MTU forwarded/flooded When forwarding the untagged packet to the VxLAN bridge port, before the netfilter hooks are called, br_handle_egress_vlan_tunnel is called and changes the skb_dst to the tunnel dst. The tunnel_dst is a metadata type of dst, i.e., skb_valid_dst(skb) is false, and metadata->dst.dev is NULL. Then in the br_netfilter hooks, in br_nf_dev_queue_xmit, there's a check for frames that needs to be fragmented: frames with higher MTU than the VxLAN device end up calling br_nf_ip_fragment, which in turns call ip_skb_dst_mtu. The ip_dst_mtu tries to use the skb_dst(skb) as if it was a valid dst with valid dst->dev, thus the crash. This case was never supported in the first place, so drop the packet instead.
