What it actually does
The igb driver mishandles non-fatal PCIe errors by skipping device shutdown in igb_io_error_detected yet still invoking igb_up in igb_io_resume, triggering a kernel BUG at napi_enable due to incorrect interface state assumptions.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using Intel igb Ethernet adapters can experience unexpected kernel panics and reboots during transient hardware errors, causing unplanned downtime on servers and workstations.
How an attack unfolds
A non-fatal PCIe Transaction Layer error (such as Completer Timeout) reaches the AER handler, which calls igb_io_error_detected (no down) followed by igb_io_resume; the resume path unconditionally calls igb_up, hitting the napi_enable assertion and crashing the kernel. No specific threat actors are documented exploiting this instance.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix present in commit 2dde18cd1d8fac735875f2e4987f11817cc0bc2c or later; rebuild and boot a patched kernel. For distributions, install the corresponding security update once released.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 2dde18cd1d8fac735875f2e4987f11817cc0bc2c or verify that igb_io_resume now checks netif_running and device state before calling igb_up; test by injecting non-fatal AER errors.
Typical attack path
- Trigger or observe non-fatal PCIe error on igb device
- AER subsystem invokes igb_io_error_detected which skips igb_down for non-fatal case
- igb_io_resume is called while interface remains up
- igb_up executes and calls napi_enable on an unprepared NAPI structure
- Kernel hits BUG at net/core/dev.c:6539 resulting in panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for the exact panic signature containing napi_enable+0x37 and igb_io_resume; correlate with preceding AER Uncorrected (Non-Fatal) messages referencing device 8086:1537. Review dmesg and journalctl for igb link down/up sequences around the crash timestamp.
- kernel BUG at net/core/dev.c:6539
- napi_enable+0x37/0x40
- igb_io_resume+0x25/0x70
- igb 0000:09:00.0: Non-correctable non-fatal error reported
- AER: Uncorrected (Non-Fatal) error received
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel packages on all systems exposing igb interfaces
- Monitor vendor advisories for backported fixes in supported LTS kernels
- Consider disabling AER error reporting or using alternative drivers only if patching is delayed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: igb: Do not bring the device up after non-fatal error Commit 004d25060c78 ("igb: Fix igb_down hung on surprise removal") changed igb_io_error_detected() to ignore non-fatal pcie errors in order to avoid hung task that can happen when igb_down() is called multiple times. This caused an issue when processing transient non-fatal errors. igb_io_resume(), which is called after igb_io_error_detected(), assumes that device is brought down by igb_io_error_detected() if the interface is up. This resulted in panic with stacktrace below.
