What it actually does
Insufficient size and header validation in slhc_remember() allows malicious packets to reach code paths that use uninitialized IPv4/TCP header pointers, resulting in KMSAN-detected uninit-value usage in the Linux kernel SLIP/PPP stack.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using SLIP or PPPoE interfaces may experience kernel instability, crashes, or limited memory disclosure, potentially disrupting network services; low urgency as the issue is not known to be exploited in the wild and fixed versions are available.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a short or malformed packet lacking full IPv4/TCP headers and sends it via PPPoE; the packet reaches ppp_receive_nonmp_frame which calls slhc_remember without adequate checks, triggering uninitialized value access as reported in kernel logs.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a fixed kernel version such as kernel-rt (Rocky Linux:8) 0:4.18.0-348.7.1.rt7.137.el8_5 or mainline commit ba6501ea06462d6404d57d5644cf2854db38e7d7; rebuild and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify running kernel version matches or exceeds listed fixed versions; re-test with packet fuzzing targeting slhc_remember to confirm absence of uninit-value reports.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious short packet missing IPv4/TCP headers
- Transmit via PPPoE or PPP interface to target kernel
- Trigger pppoe_rcv_core -> ppp_input -> ppp_receive_nonmp_frame -> slhc_remember
- Cause uninit-value dereference leading to crash or information leak
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for strings referencing slhc_remember uninit-value, KMSAN reports, or stack traces involving ppp_receive_nonmp_frame and drivers/net/slip/slhc.c.
- BUG: KMSAN: uninit-value in slhc_remember
- slhc_remember+0x2e8/0x7b0 drivers/net/slip/slhc.c:666
- ppp_receive_nonmp_frame+0xe45/0x35e0 drivers/net/ppp/ppp_generic.c:2455
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates to the listed fixed versions immediately on affected systems
- Disable SLIP and PPPoE interfaces if not required
- Monitor kernel logs for KMSAN or similar uninit-value warnings in slip/slhc.c
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: slip: make slhc_remember() more robust against malicious packets syzbot found that slhc_remember() was missing checks against malicious packets [1]. slhc_remember() only checked the size of the packet was at least 20, which is not good enough. We need to make sure the packet includes the IPv4 and TCP header that are supposed to be carried. Add iph and th pointers to make the code more readable.
