What it actually does
Use-after-free in the v3d DRM driver when an active performance monitor pointer remains after the owning process exits and the monitor is freed in v3d_perfmon_close_file, leading to a stale reference dereference on subsequent v3d_bin_job_run and mutex operations that produces a kernel paging fault and panic.
Why it matters to the business
Unpatched Linux systems using the v3d GPU driver (commonly Raspberry Pi 4) experience kernel crashes during graphics workloads that enable performance monitors, resulting in denial of service, interrupted services, and the need for immediate kernel updates to maintain stability on affected hardware.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or local user runs an application such as kmscube with GALLIUM_HUD performance monitors enabled, closes the file descriptor (triggering monitor destruction without clearing the active pointer), then re-runs the workload; the driver later dereferences the now-invalid active_perfmon pointer inside v3d_perfmon_stop, causing the crash. No named threat actors have been observed exploiting this specific issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 24ab54a066d2ef671b03eb909ca2114c0c9ac1e7 or later; for Rocky Linux 8 packages apply the listed fixed versions of postgresql and related modules if they ship the affected v3d driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 24ab54a066d2ef671b03eb909ca2114c0c9ac1e7, reproduce the original kmscube + GALLIUM_HUD workload, and verify no kernel oops occurs on file descriptor close and re-launch.
Typical attack path
- Start graphics application that registers v3d performance monitors via GALLIUM_HUD
- Close the DRM file descriptor while monitors are still active
- Re-launch the same or similar workload that triggers v3d_bin_job_run
- Kernel follows stale active_perfmon pointer and panics during mutex acquisition
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for Oops messages referencing v3d_perfmon_stop, __mutex_lock, and v3d_bin; correlate process names such as v3d_bin or kmscube with abrupt terminations around the time of the fault.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing the v3d driver within the next patch cycle
- Disable GALLIUM_HUD or v3d performance monitoring on unpatched systems as a temporary mitigation
- Monitor vendor kernel changelogs for backports of the referenced commit

Although all perfmons are destroyed in `v3d_perfmon_close_file()`, the active performance monitor's pointer (`v3d->active_perfmon`) is still retained. If `kmscube` is run again, the driver will attempt to stop the active performance monitor using the stale pointer in `v3d->active_perfmon`. However, this pointer is no longer valid because the previous process has already terminated, and all performance monitors associated with it have been destroyed and freed. To fix this, when the active performance monitor belongs to a given process, explicitly stop it before destroying and freeing it.
