What it actually does
Double unlock of a lock in ocfs2_read_blocks() due to an extra unlock before function exit, violating lock balance and enabling race conditions in the OCFS2 filesystem.
Why it matters to the business
Potential kernel crashes, filesystem corruption, or denial of service on systems using the OCFS2 clustered filesystem, increasing operational risk for Linux environments with this code path; low exploitability reduces immediate urgency but requires patching during normal maintenance windows.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers ocfs2_read_blocks() under specific concurrent conditions to hit the unbalanced unlock, leading to kernel instability or memory corruption that could be chained for privilege escalation or denial of service.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit 69973b830859bc6529a7a0468ba0d80ee5117826 or later; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel image, then reboot affected nodes. For OCFS2 users, verify the patch is included in the distribution kernel version.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 69973b830859bc6529a7a0468ba0d80ee5117826 via git log or kernel version string; test OCFS2 read paths under load to ensure no unlock imbalance warnings appear in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on a Linux system using OCFS2
- Craft or trigger concurrent I/O operations that invoke ocfs2_read_blocks()
- Exploit the double-unlock race to cause kernel panic or corrupt internal state
- Escalate via resulting instability or use as part of a larger chain
How to detect it
Review dmesg and kernel logs for unlock imbalance or lockdep warnings referencing ocfs2_read_blocks; inspect for unexpected OCFS2 filesystem errors or panics coinciding with I/O activity.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching OCFS2-enabled systems in the next maintenance cycle
- Monitor kernel logs for unlock balance warnings on OCFS2 volumes
- Limit OCFS2 usage to trusted environments until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: remove unreasonable unlock in ocfs2_read_blocks Patch series "Misc fixes for ocfs2_read_blocks", v5. This series contains 2 fixes for ocfs2_read_blocks(). The first patch fix the issue reported by syzbot, which detects bad unlock balance in ocfs2_read_blocks(). The second patch fixes an issue reported by Heming Zhao when reviewing above fix. This patch (of 2): There was a lock release before exiting, so remove the unreasonable unlock.
