What it actually does
The vulnerability is a potential null pointer dereference in dcn20_validate_apply_pipe_split_flags within the AMD display driver (drm/amd/display) of the Linux kernel, where a merge pointer is dereferenced without validation.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using AMD GPUs on affected kernels may experience unexpected crashes or display subsystem failures, disrupting operations and requiring reboots or maintenance windows, especially on servers or workstations with heavy graphics workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers display pipe validation code paths that invoke the function with a null merge pointer, leading to a kernel-level null dereference and potential crash; listed threat actors have targeted similar Linux kernel memory issues in zero-day campaigns but no confirmed exploitation exists for this specific flaw.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 39a580cd15397e102aaec25986ae5acf492f8930 or later stable equivalents; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel across affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the fix commit is present in the kernel source tree; recompile with static analysis tools such as Coverity to verify absence of the FORWARD_NULL issues; test display initialization paths under load.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems running vulnerable Linux kernel versions with AMD display hardware
- Trigger graphics or display configuration changes that exercise pipe split validation
- Supply conditions causing a null merge pointer to be passed to dcn20_validate_apply_pipe_split_flags
- Induce kernel panic or denial of service via the resulting null dereference
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg output for null pointer dereference faults originating from drm/amd/display or dcn20_validate_apply_pipe_split_flags; correlate with display configuration events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all AMD GPU-equipped Linux hosts within standard patching cycles
- Enable kernel panic logging and monitoring for drm/amd/display related faults
- Review downstream package dependencies for any indirect exposure through graphics stacks
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Pass non-null to dcn20_validate_apply_pipe_split_flags [WHAT & HOW] "dcn20_validate_apply_pipe_split_flags" dereferences merge, and thus it cannot be a null pointer. Let's pass a valid pointer to avoid null dereference. This fixes 2 FORWARD_NULL issues reported by Coverity.
