A bug in the Linux filesystem code can let a local user crash the system or possibly gain higher privileges by tricking the kernel into reading memory it should not access.

What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read / use-after-free in ext4_search_dir when e_value_offs in an inline directory entry is modified by concurrent changes to system.data xattrs on the underlying block device.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers on affected Linux systems can trigger kernel crashes or potentially escalate privileges; organizations running ext4 filesystems face elevated risk of denial-of-service or compromise until kernels are updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access mounts an ext4 filesystem, then manipulates the block device (for example via loop device resize or direct writes) to alter system.data xattrs while directory lookups occur; this invalidates cached e_value_offs values leading to out-of-bounds memory access during ext4_lookup or symlink creation.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 5b076d37e8d99918e9294bd6b35a8bbb436819b0 or later stable backports; rebuild and reboot all affected systems. Apply vendor kernel packages as soon as they become available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the fix commit, confirm ext4_xattr_ibody_find is called after ext4_get_inode_loc, and re-test with KASAN-enabled builds using the original reproducer sequence.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on a Linux host using ext4
- Create or open a loop device backed by a crafted image
- Mount the ext4 filesystem without journal
- Trigger concurrent modification of system.data xattrs via direct block writes
- Perform directory lookups or symlink creation that call ext4_search_dir
- Trigger KASAN-detected UAF or OOB read
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for EXT4-fs mount messages followed by KASAN use-after-free reports referencing ext4_search_dir or ext4_find_inline_entry; look for unexpected loop device capacity changes or direct block writes on ext4 volumes.
- BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in ext4_search_dir
- ext4_search_dir+0xf2/0x1c0 fs/ext4/namei.c:1500
- EXT4-fs .* mounted filesystem .* without journal
- loop.*: detected capacity change from .* to .*
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching of all ext4-based Linux systems within the next maintenance window
- Monitor for new stable kernel releases containing the referenced commit
- Restrict untrusted local user access on systems that cannot be immediately updated
- Enable kernel hardening features such as KASAN in test environments to catch similar issues
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: avoid OOB when system.data xattr changes underneath the filesystem When looking up for an entry in an inlined directory, if e_value_offs is changed underneath the filesystem by some change in the block device, it will lead to an out-of-bounds access that KASAN detects as an UAF. EXT4-fs (loop0): mounted filesystem 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 r/w without journal.
