What it actually does
The vulnerability occurs because the iwcm_wq workqueue is allocated without the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag; calling flush_workqueue from destroy_cm_id (triggered during RDMA CM ID teardown or NVMe/RDMA queue resets) violates forward-progress guarantees when the current context is memory reclaim or another non-reclaim workqueue, resulting in a deadlock warning or actual deadlock.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems relying on RDMA/InfiniBand or NVMe-over-RDMA storage and networking may encounter kernel instability, warnings, or deadlocks during connection teardown or controller resets, causing service outages in high-performance computing, storage clusters, and cloud environments; the fix has been available since late 2024 so unpatched kernels remain exposed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers RDMA connection or NVMe/RDMA queue lifecycle events that invoke _destroy_id and destroy_cm_id; this calls flush_workqueue on iwcm_wq from a reclaim or nested workqueue context, hitting the check_flush_dependency assertion and potentially deadlocking the system.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 219d54332a09e8d8741c1e1982f5eae56099de85 or later, which adds the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag when allocating iwcm_wq; rebuild, boot the new kernel, and verify with RDMA and NVMe/RDMA workloads.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the alloc_ordered_workqueue call for iwcm_wq in drivers/infiniband/core/iwcm.c contains WQ_MEM_RECLAIM; reproduce destroy_cm_id and nvme_rdma_reset_ctrl_work paths while monitoring for the check_flush_dependency warning.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on an affected Linux kernel
- Initiate or reset RDMA CM IDs or NVMe/RDMA queues
- Force destroy_cm_id path that calls flush_workqueue on iwcm_wq
- Arrange concurrent memory reclaim or conflicting workqueue activity to trigger deadlock
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, journalctl) for the strings check_flush_dependency, iwcm_wq, destroy_cm_id, and nvme_rdma_reset_ctrl_work around the time of RDMA or NVMe controller events; correlate with process_one_work and worker_thread stack traces.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit on all affected systems without delay
- Prioritize patching hosts that use RDMA or NVMe-over-RDMA
- Add kernel workqueue warning strings to SIEM alerting
- Limit unprivileged local access on critical RDMA nodes until updated
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/iwcm: Fix WARNING:at_kernel/workqueue.c:#check_flush_dependency In the commit aee2424246f9 ("RDMA/iwcm: Fix a use-after-free related to destroying CM IDs"), the function flush_workqueue is invoked to flush the work queue iwcm_wq. But at that time, the work queue iwcm_wq was created via the function alloc_ordered_workqueue without the flag WQ_MEM_RECLAIM. Because the current process is trying to flush the whole iwcm_wq, if iwcm_wq doesn't have the flag WQ_MEM_RECLAIM, verify that the current process is not reclaiming memory or running on a workqueue which doesn't have the flag WQ_MEM_RECLAIM as that can break forward-progress guarantee leading to a deadlock.
