What it actually does
Race condition in powerpc queued spinlock MCS queue allows interrupt between count increment and node lock initialization, causing write to wrong qnode next pointer and indefinite spinning deadlock on contended locks.
Why it matters to the business
Occasional hard lockups and system unresponsiveness on multi-core PowerPC Linux systems under load, leading to service disruption and potential data processing halts without remote code execution.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker runs local code that triggers contended spinlocks while forcing interrupt timing between qnode count increment and lock field initialization; this corrupts the MCS queue so the original CPU spins forever waiting for a next pointer that is never set, as seen in stress-ng triggered watchdog lockups.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit d84ab6661e8d09092de9b034b016515ef9b66085 or later stable backports; rebuild and reboot affected systems; apply vendor-specific PowerPC kernel packages when available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the fix in powerpc/qspinlock.c, verify no lockups under equivalent stress-ng workloads on patched kernel, and check running kernel version against the fixed commit hash.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution on affected PowerPC Linux system
- Trigger high contention on spinlocks via multithreaded or I/O heavy workloads
- Induce interrupt during the narrow window after qnodesp->count++ but before nodes[].lock assignment
- Cause get_tail_qnode to match stale lock value and corrupt successor next pointer
- Result in CPU hard lockup when queue head spins indefinitely
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for watchdog hard LOCKUP entries referencing queued_spin_lock_slowpath; inspect call traces showing raw_spin_lock and futex or scheduler paths; correlate with high contention workloads.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all PowerPC Linux deployments within standard change windows
- Monitor for CPU hard lockup messages in dmesg and watchdog logs
- Test patched kernels under synthetic contention loads before broad rollout
- Review downstream dependent packages for any additional kernel updates
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: powerpc/qspinlock: Fix deadlock in MCS queue If an interrupt occurs in queued_spin_lock_slowpath() after we increment qnodesp->count and before node->lock is initialized, another CPU might see stale lock values in get_tail_qnode(). If the stale lock value happens to match the lock on that CPU, then we write to the "next" pointer of the wrong qnode. This causes a deadlock as the former CPU, once it becomes the head of the MCS queue, will spin indefinitely until it's "next" pointer is set by its successor in the queue. Running stress-ng on a 16 core (16EC/16VP) shared LPAR, results in occasional lockups similar to the following: $ stress-ng --all 128 --vm-bytes 80% --aggressive \ --maximize --oomable --verify --syslog \ --metrics --times --timeout 5m watchdog: CPU 15 Hard LOCKUP ......
