What it actually does

This is a WebKit/Safari cookie state-management flaw that can be triggered when a user processes maliciously crafted web content. The practical result is cross-site scripting in the browser context: attacker-controlled script may execute as if it belonged to a trusted site, allowing access to page data available to JavaScript, manipulation of page content, unauthorized user actions within the affected web session, and potential theft of session material where it is not protected by browser controls such as HttpOnly. Apple reported active exploitation on Intel-based Mac systems, and this class of browser bug is commonly used as part of exploit chains where an initial web-content compromise is followed by sandbox escape, credential theft, or malware delivery.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can compromise user web sessions, expose sensitive information handled through the browser, enable fraudulent actions in business applications, and create a foothold for follow-on compromise of managed Apple endpoints. The risk is elevated because this vulnerability is in CISA KEV, has known in-the-wild exploitation, and the CISA remediation deadline of 2024-12-12 has already passed. Organizations with unmanaged or slow-patching macOS, iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, or Safari deployments should treat remaining exposure as overdue remediation, especially for executives, developers, finance users, and other high-value users targeted by espionage or financially motivated campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker first prepares a malicious web page, advertisement, iframe, link, or compromised legitimate site containing content designed to trigger the cookie state-management issue in affected Apple browser components. The attacker then gets a target to load that content through phishing, watering-hole activity, malvertising, messaging links, or redirection from another compromised site. When the vulnerable Safari/WebKit component processes the crafted content, attacker-controlled script can execute in an unintended web context. From there, the attacker may read or alter accessible page content, attempt to capture tokens or sensitive form data, perform actions as the user in web applications, or redirect the victim to additional payloads. In observed real-world activity, this type of Apple browser zero-day exploitation has been associated with targeted campaigns, and the browser-side XSS stage may be only the first step in a broader chain against Intel-based Mac systems.

How to fix it

Apply Apple’s fixed releases across all affected platforms: Safari 18.1.1, iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2, iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, and visionOS 2.1.1 or later. Prioritize Intel-based Mac systems because Apple specifically reported active exploitation there. Enforce automatic updates where possible, block unsupported Apple OS versions from accessing sensitive services, and ensure managed browsers and WebKit-based applications inherit the patched system components. If source/package tracking includes the supplied GIT package metadata, verify gnutls/gnutls is at or beyond commit 55d6c2e2baf2136f9bf943e84828e94c947d92f6; however, the vulnerability description and vendor-fixed versions indicate the primary remediation path is Apple platform and Safari updating. As compensating controls until patching is complete, restrict access to high-risk sites, increase web proxy inspection for suspicious redirects, disable or limit unmanaged browser use, harden cookies with HttpOnly/SameSite/Secure where applications are under organizational control, and require reauthentication for sensitive actions in web applications.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm that Apple endpoints report fixed or later versions: Safari 18.1.1 or later, iOS/iPadOS 17.7.2 or later for the 17.x line, iOS/iPadOS 18.1.1 or later for the 18.x line, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 or later, and visionOS 2.1.1 or later. On macOS, validate using software inventory, MDM compliance status, `sw_vers`, Safari application version, and installed update receipts. On iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS, validate through MDM OS-version inventory and compliance policies. For any repositories or dependency inventories that include the supplied gnutls/gnutls package record, confirm the source revision includes commit 55d6c2e2baf2136f9bf943e84828e94c947d92f6 or a later fixed commit. Re-scan vulnerability management data after patch deployment, then verify that previously vulnerable assets no longer appear in inventory, SBOM, endpoint management, or EDR exposure views. Because this is KEV and actively exploited, validation should include both patch confirmation and a retrospective hunt for suspicious browser activity before and shortly after remediation.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify targets likely to use vulnerable Safari, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or visionOS versions.
  2. Host maliciously crafted web content or compromise a legitimate website/advertising path to serve the exploit content.
  3. Deliver the lure through phishing, messaging, malvertising, watering-hole placement, or a redirect chain.
  4. The victim opens the link or browses to the compromised content using an affected Apple browser component.
  5. The crafted content triggers the cookie state-management flaw and causes attacker-controlled script to run in an unintended web context.
  6. The attacker accesses or manipulates data available to that web session, such as page content, forms, non-HttpOnly tokens, or user actions.
  7. The attacker may pivot to credential theft, session abuse, additional exploit-chain stages, malware delivery, or persistence depending on the target and payload.

How to detect it

There are no public exploit-specific payload strings that are reliable for this vulnerability, so detection should focus on behavioral and retrospective evidence. Review web proxy, secure web gateway, DNS, and browser telemetry for Apple users who visited newly registered, low-reputation, compromised, or redirect-heavy domains shortly before suspicious account activity. On macOS, examine EDR and unified logs for Safari or WebKit content processes spawning unexpected child processes, launching script interpreters, writing unusual files, or making network connections outside normal browsing patterns. Review identity-provider and SaaS logs for session anomalies after suspicious browsing events, including impossible travel, new device enrollment, abnormal OAuth grants, mailbox rule creation, financial workflow changes, or unexpected downloads. Inspect browser history, quarantine events, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, login items, recently modified user directories, and persistence locations on systems that were vulnerable before patching. For Intel-based Macs, increase scrutiny because Apple specifically reported active exploitation on that platform. Detection should correlate: vulnerable Apple version, suspicious web visit or redirect chain, browser/WebKit anomaly, and subsequent account or endpoint behavior.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately identify all Apple endpoints and browsers below the fixed versions, with highest priority for Intel-based Macs and high-value users.
  • Patch or upgrade affected Apple systems to Safari 18.1.1, iOS/iPadOS 17.7.2, iOS/iPadOS 18.1.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, visionOS 2.1.1, or later.
  • Treat unpatched assets as KEV-overdue because the CISA deadline was 2024-12-12; escalate exceptions through risk acceptance or isolate them from sensitive services.
  • Run retrospective threat hunting for suspicious Safari/WebKit activity, unusual redirects, credential prompts, browser child processes, and endpoint changes around user browsing events.
  • Review web proxy, DNS, EDR, browser history, and identity logs for signs of phishing, watering-hole, malvertising, or anomalous session use targeting Apple users.
  • Force reauthentication and consider session revocation for users with evidence of suspicious browsing followed by abnormal SaaS, SSO, email, or financial application activity.
  • Harden enterprise web applications by setting cookies with HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite attributes and by requiring step-up authentication for sensitive actions.
  • Ensure MDM compliance policies block outdated Apple OS and Safari versions from accessing corporate resources.
  • Monitor threat intelligence for Apple WebKit/Safari exploit-chain updates tied to 2024 zero-day exploitation, espionage, and financially motivated campaigns.
  • If dependency tooling flags the supplied gnutls/gnutls package metadata, confirm commit 55d6c2e2baf2136f9bf943e84828e94c947d92f6 or later while separately remediating the Apple platform exposure.

The record

A cookie management issue was addressed with improved state management. This issue is fixed in Safari 18.1.1, iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2, iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, visionOS 2.1.1. Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to a cross site scripting attack. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems.
