What it actually does
This is a remote code execution vulnerability in Apple web content processing. A malicious webpage, embedded web content, or web-delivered payload can trigger unsafe behavior in the browser/web rendering stack and cause attacker-controlled code to run in the context of the affected application. The CVSS vector indicates network reachability, low attack complexity, no required privileges, and required user interaction, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. Apple reported active exploitation against Intel-based Mac systems, making this a confirmed in-the-wild zero-day rather than a theoretical issue. The supplied affected-product metadata referencing gnutls/gnutls appears inconsistent with the Apple advisory text; treat Apple Safari, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS exposure as the primary concern, and separately reconcile any GnuTLS inventory findings with package-specific advisories.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can allow compromise of an endpoint after a user visits or is redirected to malicious web content, potentially leading to data theft, session compromise, malware installation, surveillance, or further movement inside an organization. Because this vulnerability is in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, has reported active exploitation, and had a federal remediation deadline of 2024-12-12, any remaining exposure should be treated as overdue and high priority. The highest operational risk is to users on unpatched Apple devices, especially Intel-based Macs, who browse the web, open links from email or messaging platforms, or use applications that render web content.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first prepares maliciously crafted web content that targets the vulnerable Apple web content processing component. The attacker then delivers that content through a compromised website, watering-hole page, malicious advertisement, phishing link, embedded web view, or redirect chain. When a vulnerable user opens the content, the browser or application processing the page triggers the flaw. If exploitation succeeds, attacker-controlled code executes on the device with the privileges available to the affected process. In real intrusions, this type of exploit is often paired with sandbox escape, privilege escalation, persistence, credential/session theft, or spyware delivery. Apple specifically reported active exploitation on Intel-based Mac systems, so investigation should prioritize those systems while still patching all affected Apple platforms.
How to fix it
Apply Apple security updates immediately. Fixed versions listed by Apple are Safari 18.1.1, iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2, iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, and visionOS 2.1.1. Ensure all supported Apple endpoints are updated to these versions or later. Prioritize Intel-based Mac systems because Apple reported active exploitation there. Where immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by restricting access to untrusted websites, disabling or limiting high-risk browser use, enforcing managed browser controls, using web isolation where available, blocking known malicious domains from threat intelligence feeds, and ensuring endpoint detection and response coverage is active. If package inventory separately reports gnutls/gnutls exposure, validate that finding against the relevant GnuTLS advisory data; the supplied package-fixed commit is 55d6c2e2baf2136f9bf943e84828e94c947d92f6, but that metadata appears unrelated to the Apple vulnerability description and should not be used as a substitute for Apple OS/browser updates.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Apple devices are running fixed or later versions: Safari 18.1.1 or later, iOS/iPadOS 17.7.2 or later on the 17.x branch, iOS/iPadOS 18.1.1 or later on the 18.x branch, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 or later, and visionOS 2.1.1 or later. On macOS, validate OS and Safari versions through device management inventory, software update status, System Settings, or command-line collection such as sw_vers and Safari application version checks. On iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS, validate through MDM inventory or Settings > General > About. Confirm update enforcement policies apply to all managed Apple devices, including BYOD devices if they access corporate resources. For exposure management, query asset inventory for vulnerable Apple OS/browser versions and prioritize Intel Macs. For the inconsistent gnutls/gnutls metadata, confirm whether any tooling is incorrectly associating this CVE with GnuTLS and correct software composition analysis mappings if needed.
Typical attack path
- Attacker identifies target users likely to run vulnerable Apple Safari, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS versions.
- Attacker hosts or injects maliciously crafted web content on a site, advertisement, redirector, or phishing-controlled page.
- Victim is lured or redirected to the malicious content using email, messaging, compromised websites, ads, or watering-hole tactics.
- Affected Apple web content processing code parses the malicious content and triggers memory-safety or logic failure conditions leading to code execution.
- Attacker payload executes in the context of the browser or web-rendering process.
- Attacker attempts post-exploitation actions such as process injection, data collection, browser/session theft, persistence, command-and-control communication, or chaining with additional local privilege escalation vulnerabilities.
How to detect it
There are no universally reliable public indicators for this vulnerability because exploitation can be delivered through transient web content and may leave limited application-level evidence. Focus on behavioral and retrospective detection. Review Apple Unified Logs, Safari and browser history where available, web proxy logs, DNS logs, EDR telemetry, firewall logs, and crash reports from vulnerable Apple devices. Prioritize Intel-based Macs and systems that were unpatched before Apple fixed versions were installed. Look for suspicious browsing immediately followed by Safari/WebKit-related crashes, unexpected process launches, new persistence items, unusual outbound connections, unsigned or newly created executables, credential access attempts, or security tool tampering. Useful macOS artifacts include Unified Logs, DiagnosticReports crash files, LaunchAgents/LaunchDaemons, login items, quarantine events, browser cache/history, downloaded files, and EDR process/network events. Hunt for anomalous child processes spawned by Safari or WebKit web content processes, connections to newly registered or low-reputation domains after browsing activity, and post-exploitation behavior such as osascript, shell, curl, Python, or installer activity initiated from a browser context. If compromise is suspected, preserve disk, memory where possible, browser artifacts, and crash logs before remediation. Threat context includes reported 2024 zero-day exploitation campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors, so detection should account for stealthy post-exploitation rather than only commodity malware indicators.
What your security team should do
- Treat this as an emergency patching item for any remaining vulnerable Apple devices because it is in CISA KEV and exploitation has been observed in the wild.
- Prioritize Intel-based Macs first, followed by all other affected Apple endpoints running vulnerable Safari, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or visionOS versions.
- Use MDM or endpoint management to force installation of fixed Apple versions or later and block access to corporate resources from noncompliant devices where feasible.
- Run retrospective threat hunting on vulnerable Apple endpoints, especially around the period before patch deployment and around suspicious browsing, redirects, crashes, or unknown process execution events.
- Review browser, proxy, DNS, EDR, and network telemetry for suspicious web-driven exploitation patterns, unusual child processes from Safari/WebKit-related components, and unexpected outbound connections after web browsing activity.
- Ensure endpoint detection tooling is deployed and healthy on macOS systems; collect unified logs and crash reports from high-risk systems before reimaging if compromise is suspected.
- Educate users not to open unsolicited links while patch coverage is being completed, but do not rely on user behavior as the primary mitigation.
- Reconcile the supplied gnutls/gnutls affected-product data with vendor advisories, because it appears inconsistent with this Apple web content vulnerability and may indicate an inventory or enrichment mapping error.
The record
The issue was addressed with improved checks. This issue is fixed in Safari 18.1.1, iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2, iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, visionOS 2.1.1. Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems.
