What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in the AMD display driver when reading the DTN debug log for DCN401 hardware because the gamut_remap callback is not initialized in dcn401_dpp_funcs.
Why it matters to the business
Local users can trigger kernel panics on systems with affected AMD GPUs, causing system crashes, denial of service, and loss of unsaved work; low EPSS and no KEV status indicate limited active exploitation risk but still requires prompt patching on prevalent Linux distributions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local shell access reads the amdgpu_dm_dtn_log debugfs file, which invokes dcn10_log_color_state and ultimately dereferences an uninitialized function pointer in the DCN401 path, resulting in a kernel oops.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 1e68b7ce6bc6073579fe8713ec6b85aa9cd2e351 or later; restrict debugfs access via mount options or permissions until patched.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the fix commit is present in the running kernel source or test that reading the DTN log no longer produces a NULL dereference oops on DCN401 hardware.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged shell on a Linux system with an affected AMD DCN401 GPU
- Execute cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/amdgpu_dm_dtn_log
- Trigger NULL pointer dereference in dcn10_log_color_state leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference traces containing dcn10_log_color_state, dcn10_log_hw_state, and dtn_log_read from the amdgpu module.
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: NULL
- dcn10_log_color_state+0xf9/0x510 [amdgpu]
- dtn_log_read+0x82/0x120 [amdgpu]
- /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/amdgpu_dm_dtn_log
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or newer stable release to all affected systems
- Limit unprivileged access to /sys/kernel/debug where feasible
- Monitor kernel logs for amdgpu-related NULL pointer oopses

This commit addresses this issue by adding a proper guard to access the gamut_remap callback in case the specific ASIC did not implement this function.
