What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in ext4_da_write_end when accessing unset page folio private pointer after failed inline data restoration following ext4_force_shutdown during concurrent short inline data writes that trigger block bitmap inconsistency errors.
Why it matters to the business
Causes kernel crashes on affected systems leading to denial of service, unplanned reboots, and potential data loss or corruption during file operations on ext4 filesystems.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker uses multiple threads to write short inline data to a file while inducing ext4_grp_locked_error conditions that invoke ext4_force_shutdown; the subsequent write path in ext4_da_write_end then dereferences a NULL private pointer that was never set due to the shutdown.
How to fix it
Apply kernel patch adding early return with -EIO when private pointer is NULL after ext4_force_shutdown. Update affected Android devices to fixed versions in platform/frameworks/base for Android 10, 11, 12, 12L, and 13 as listed in the advisory.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify presence of NULL check on folio private pointer in ext4_da_write_end path and confirm no crash occurs under the described two-thread inline data write test case with forced shutdown.
Typical attack path
- Create file and initiate concurrent writes of short inline data from multiple threads
- Trigger block bitmap and bg descriptor inconsistency to invoke ext4_force_shutdown
- Force inline data conversion that fails to restore EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA flag
- Execute write operation that reaches ext4_da_write_end and dereferences unset folio private pointer
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for null-ptr-deref in ext4_da_write_end or __block_commit_write, and traces showing ext4_force_shutdown followed by write_iter calls.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Android devices running vulnerable kernel versions with the listed fixed releases
- Monitor kernel logs for oops traces involving ext4_da_write_end and __block_commit_write
- Restrict untrusted workloads that perform heavy inline data writes on ext4 until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: sanity check for NULL pointer after ext4_force_shutdown Test case: 2 threads write short inline data to a file. In ext4_page_mkwrite the resulting inline data is converted. Handling ext4_grp_locked_error with description "block bitmap and bg descriptor inconsistent: X vs Y free clusters" calls ext4_force_shutdown. The conversion clears EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA but fails for ext4_destroy_inline_data_nolock and ext4_mark_iloc_dirty due to ext4_forced_shutdown. The restoration of inline data fails for the same reason not setting EXT4_STATE_MAY_INLINE_DATA. Without the flag set a regular process path in ext4_da_write_end follows trying to dereference page folio private pointer that has not been set. The fix calls early return with -EIO error shall the pointer to private be NULL.
