A web page editor has a theoretical flaw that would only matter if someone took over one specific website and a rarely used optional check was turned on, which almost never happens.

What it actually does

If an attacker fully compromises the cke4.ckeditor.com domain, they could serve malicious version notification payloads to CKEditor 4 instances that have the version notification feature explicitly enabled, resulting in limited client-side code execution or data exfiltration within the editor context.

Why it matters to the business

The vulnerability is theoretical and requires an extremely unlikely domain takeover; impact is limited to non-LTS deployments that have turned on a disabled-by-default feature, so operational risk and urgency remain negligible for the vast majority of users.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker would first need to seize control of the official CKEditor version notification domain, after which they could craft and serve a malicious notification payload that is fetched by any editor instance with the feature enabled; no known threat actors have demonstrated this capability.

How to fix it

Upgrade CKEditor 4 to version 4.25.0-lts or later; confirm that the version notification feature remains disabled (its default state in all LTS releases) if an immediate upgrade is not feasible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the editor version string reports 4.25.0-lts or newer and inspect configuration to ensure config.versionCheck is not explicitly set to true.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain administrative control of the cke4.ckeditor.com domain
  2. Host a malicious version notification response on that domain
  3. Wait for a CKEditor 4 instance with notifications enabled to poll the endpoint
  4. Deliver the crafted payload that executes within the editor's context

How to detect it

Monitor network logs for unexpected connections from editor instances to cke4.ckeditor.com and review any version notification responses that contain unexpected script or markup.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to 4.25.0-lts only for any non-LTS instances still in use
  • Audit configuration files to confirm version notifications are not enabled
  • Treat the issue as informational unless domain compromise indicators appear

The record

CKEditor4 is an open source what-you-see-is-what-you-get HTML editor. A theoretical vulnerability has been identified in CKEditor 4.22 (and above). In a highly unlikely scenario where an attacker gains control over the https://cke4.ckeditor.com domain, they could potentially execute an attack on CKEditor 4 instances. The issue impacts only editor instances with enabled version notifications. Please note that this feature is disabled by default in all CKEditor 4 LTS versions. Therefore, if you use CKEditor 4 LTS, it is highly unlikely that you are affected by this vulnerability. If you are unsure, please contact us. The fix is available in version 4.25.0-lts.
