A flaw in the Linux kernel can cause the computer to freeze when certain storage devices are unplugged while still in use.

What it actually does

Race condition creates ABBA deadlock: sd_remove calls del_gendisk which freezes the request queue then acquires disk->open_mutex, while a concurrent sd_release path holds open_mutex and blocks in blk_queue_enter waiting for the freeze depth to clear; SCSI devices lack GD_OWNS_QUEUE so QUEUE_FLAG_DYING is never set.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using removable block devices (USB storage, certain SCSI setups) can experience indefinite hangs of kernel workers and user processes during device disconnect or shutdown, leading to loss of availability, failed unmounts, and potential need for forced reboots; affects a very large number of downstream Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers concurrent device removal (via usb_disconnect or scsi_remove_host) while another thread performs a release or I/O operation on the same block device; the two paths acquire the queue freeze and open_mutex in opposite orders, deadlocking the system. No named threat actors or ransomware usage reported.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version containing commit 5a5625a83eac91fdff1d5f0202ecfc45a31983c9 or later stable releases (6.10.3, 6.9.7, 6.8.3, 6.7.3, 6.6.1, 6.5.3, 6.4.1, 6.3.3, 6.2.4). Reboot after installing the updated kernel package.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit or is at/above the listed stable versions; attempt device removal under load and verify no hung tasks appear in dmesg related to del_gendisk or blk_queue_enter.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local unprivileged access on a Linux system with removable SCSI/USB block devices
  2. Trigger or time a device disconnect (usb_unbind, scsi_remove_host) while a process holds an open file descriptor
  3. sd_remove freezes the queue and waits for open_mutex
  4. sd_release path acquires open_mutex then blocks in blk_queue_enter waiting for freeze depth
  5. System hangs with blocked kworkers and user tasks

How to detect it

Review system logs for prolonged blocked tasks involving del_gendisk, sd_remove, sd_release, or blk_queue_enter; look for repeated mutex acquisition stalls during USB or SCSI device removal events.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems with frequent USB/SCSI device attach/detach workloads
  • Apply patches within normal change windows unless the environment has high device churn
  • Monitor for future backports into distribution kernels and schedule accordingly

This is a classic ABBA deadlock. To fix the deadlock, make sure we don't try to acquire disk->open_mutex after freezing the queue.
