What it actually does
Race condition in qla2xxx SCSI driver allows command completion outside lock during abort in unload path, leading to concurrent access and NULL pointer dereference in dma_direct_unmap_sg.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected kernel crashes and system reboots on hosts using QLogic Fibre Channel adapters during NPIV operations or firmware resets, causing downtime and potential data path disruption in storage environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local privileges triggers driver unload or FW reset sequences under NPIV workloads, racing command completion paths to induce the NULL dereference crash observed in dma and qla2xxx abort functions.
How to fix it
Update Linux kernel to include commit 457391b0380335d5e9a5babdec90ac53928b23b4 or later; rebuild and reboot with fixed qla2xxx module; avoid manual driver unload during active NPIV/FW operations until patched.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source or binary contains commit 457391b0380335d5e9a5babdec90ac53928b23b4; reproduce NPIV reset and unload under load to confirm no crash; inspect dmesg for absence of the reported oops signature.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on Linux host with qla2xxx driver loaded
- Initiate NPIV port creation or firmware reset operations
- Trigger driver unload or abort_all_cmds sequence
- Exploit concurrent completion paths to dereference NULL pointer
- Cause kernel panic and system crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for oops messages containing dma_direct_unmap_sg, qla2xxx_qpair_sp_free_dma, and __qla2x00_abort_all_cmds during driver unload; correlate with NPIV or FW reset events.

- qla2xxx_qpair_sp_free_dma+0x29f/0x3b0
- qla2xxx_qpair_sp_compl+0x60/0x80
- __qla2x00_abort_all_cmds+0xa2/0x450
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 000000000000001c
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit immediately on affected systems
- Prioritize patching hosts performing storage virtualization or frequent adapter resets
- Monitor for kernel panics matching qla2xxx abort paths until upgrade completes
- Test patched kernels in staging environments replicating NPIV workloads

However this caused race condition while command completion via multiple paths causing system crash. Hence complete the command early in unload path but within the lock to avoid race condition.
