What it actually does
Missing validation of fault attributes in f2fs parse_options allows invalid values to reach f2fs_build_fault_attr, enabling improper fault injection handling that can result in local privilege escalation or kernel memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Local users on f2fs-based Linux systems can trigger crashes, data corruption, or elevated access, increasing risk of service disruption or unauthorized control on affected kernels; widespread kernel usage amplifies exposure across servers and devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies crafted fault attributes via mount options or __sbi_store sysfs writes; the absent validation permits these values to be used in fault injection paths, leading to out-of-bounds writes or uninitialized resource use that can be chained for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit 6e5b601706ce05d94338cad598736d96bb8096c8 or later stable releases that include the f2fs_build_fault_attr validation check; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the validation condition inside f2fs_build_fault_attr and that parse_options now calls it; verify kernel source or running version contains the referenced commit.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or user context on target
- Invoke mount with invalid fault_injection options or write to f2fs sysfs attrs
- Trigger fault paths that process unchecked attributes
- Exploit resulting memory corruption for privilege escalation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and audit trails for f2fs mount option parsing errors or unexpected fault attribute writes; inspect sysfs interactions with f2fs for invalid attr attempts prior to the patch date.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed kernel commit immediately on all f2fs deployments
- Restrict local user access to mount and sysfs interfaces until patched
- Monitor EPSS trend and kernel mailing lists for related issues
- Test patched kernels in staging before production rollout
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: f2fs: check validation of fault attrs in f2fs_build_fault_attr() - It missed to check validation of fault attrs in parse_options(), let's fix to add check condition in f2fs_build_fault_attr(). - Use f2fs_build_fault_attr() in __sbi_store() to clean up code.
