What it actually does
Uninitialized bytes in the 16-byte CAN frame created by j1939_send_one() are copied to user space via raw_recvmsg(), leaking kernel memory contents (specifically bytes 12-15) from the socket buffer allocation path.
Why it matters to the business
Local processes on Linux systems using J1939 can obtain fragments of kernel memory, which may contain sensitive data that assists attackers in crafting further exploits or bypassing protections; widespread kernel deployments increase exposure surface.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts and sends a J1939 message through a CAN socket; the kernel allocates an skb without clearing the full frame, the uninitialized bytes reach user space on receive, and the leaked data is inspected for useful kernel pointers or values.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 219d54332a09e8d8741c1e1982f5eae56099de85 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; disable J1939 sockets if the protocol is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 219d54332a09e8d8741c1e1982f5eae56099de85 via git log or uname; attempt to reproduce the original KMSAN report with syzkaller or similar tooling to verify the leak is eliminated.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on a Linux host with J1939/CAN support enabled
- Create a J1939 socket and invoke sendmsg with a crafted message
- Trigger kernel path through j1939_sk_sendmsg -> j1939_sk_alloc_skb -> j1939_send_one
- Receive the echoed or related frame via raw CAN socket to capture leaked bytes
- Inspect leaked memory for useful artifacts to aid privilege escalation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KMSAN or kmemleak reports referencing j1939_send_one or raw_recvmsg; inspect user-space processes performing frequent J1939 socket operations for anomalous receive patterns; no persistent artifacts remain after reboot.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing CAN/J1939 interfaces
- Audit workloads for unnecessary J1939 socket usage and restrict via LSM or seccomp
- Monitor kernel update channels for backports to supported LTS branches
- Include the fixed commit hash in SBOM and vulnerability scanning policies
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: can: j1939: Initialize unused data in j1939_send_one() syzbot reported kernel-infoleak in raw_recvmsg() [1]. j1939_send_one() creates full frame including unused data, but it doesn't initialize it. This causes the kernel-infoleak issue. Fix this by initializing unused data.
