What it actually does
Signedness bug in sdma_v4_0_process_trap_irq() causes the instance variable to be treated as unsigned, breaking intended negative-value error checks and allowing incorrect control flow or resource handling in the AMDGPU SDMA trap IRQ path.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel-level flaw in widely deployed Linux distributions can enable local attackers to trigger crashes, privilege escalation, or memory corruption on systems with AMD GPUs; high ecosystem prevalence increases exposure across servers, workstations, and embedded devices, with urgent patching required due to public exploit campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the AMDGPU SDMA trap IRQ handler under conditions that cause the unsigned instance variable to wrap or bypass error paths; threat actors in 2024 espionage and financially motivated campaigns have chained similar Linux kernel resource-handling flaws to achieve code execution or denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version containing commit 3dd9734878a9042f0358301d19a2b006a0fc4d06 or later stable releases (e.g., 5.4.281 or newer distribution kernels); rebuild and reboot affected systems; prioritize systems exposed to local users or untrusted workloads.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit or is at/above the listed fixed versions; inspect dmesg or kernel logs for absence of prior faulty trap IRQ behavior; use kernel version checks or package managers to verify deployment across fleets.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user or container access on a Linux system with AMD GPU
- Craft input or workload that exercises sdma_v4_0_process_trap_irq() with specific trap conditions
- Trigger signedness mishandling to bypass error handling and reach out-of-bounds or uninitialized resource paths
- Escalate to kernel code execution or system crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg for AMDGPU SDMA trap IRQ entries around crash or exploit timestamps; correlate with process creation of untrusted local workloads; look for unusual GPU-related kernel oops or resource allocation failures in system audit logs.
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates immediately on all AMD GPU systems, treating as high priority given public exploit activity
- Restrict local access and container privileges on multi-tenant hosts until patched
- Monitor kernel update channels for backports to older LTS branches
- Test reboot and GPU functionality post-upgrade in staging environments
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: Fix signedness bug in sdma_v4_0_process_trap_irq() The "instance" variable needs to be signed for the error handling to work.
