What it actually does
Missing sanity checks on ff offset in ntfs3 allows walking an unvalidated offset that can exceed allocated bounds, resulting in an out-of-bounds read.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory disclosure or crash on systems using ntfs3 can lead to information leaks, denial of service, or local privilege escalation, affecting Linux servers, desktops, and embedded devices that mount NTFS volumes.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to supply a crafted NTFS filesystem image or trigger ntfs3 operations mounts the image, causes the driver to parse an ff offset that exceeds first_free bounds, and reads kernel memory beyond the intended structure.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 35652dfa8cc9a8a900ec0f1e0395781f94ffc5f0 or later stable releases that include the ff offset validation. Rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; disable ntfs3 if the filesystem is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 35652dfa8cc9a8a900ec0f1e0395781f94ffc5f0 via git log or uname output, then attempt to mount a test NTFS image containing a large ff offset and verify no out-of-bounds access occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or craft a malicious NTFS volume containing an oversized ff offset
- Mount the volume on a vulnerable Linux kernel using the ntfs3 driver
- Trigger directory enumeration or file walk that dereferences the unchecked offset
- Read kernel memory past the allocation boundary
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for ntfs3-related oops or page-fault messages involving ff offset values, monitor for unexpected mounts of NTFS volumes, and inspect auditd or syscall logs for mount operations on removable media.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing ntfs3 to untrusted volumes
- Add kernel version checks to asset inventory and patch management workflows
- Consider blacklisting the ntfs3 module via modprobe.d until patches are applied where feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Validate ff offset This adds sanity checks for ff offset. There is a check on rt->first_free at first, but walking through by ff without any check. If the second ff is a large offset. We may encounter an out-of-bound read.
