What it actually does
Uninitialized 'tag' and 'id' fields in p9_fcall structure allocated via kmem_cache_alloc are used in trace_9p_client_res when p9_check_errors fails early inside p9_client_rpc, resulting in kernel use of uninitialized memory during 9p client operations.
Why it matters to the business
Systems mounting 9p filesystems may experience kernel instability or crashes during mount or RPC error paths; low exploitability limits widespread operational impact but requires prompt patching on affected Linux kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers a 9p mount that causes p9_check_errors to fail early in p9_client_rpc before req->rc is fully populated; the subsequent trace call then reads the uninitialized tag field, potentially allowing information disclosure or denial of service via crafted 9p server responses.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that initializes 'tag' and 'id' fields to safe defaults during p9_tag_alloc in net/9p/client.c; update to a kernel containing commit 72c5d8e416ecc46af370a1340b3db5ff0b0cc867 or later stable equivalent.
How to confirm the fix worked
Rebuild with KMSAN enabled and re-execute the mount sequence that previously triggered the uninit-value report; confirm absence of KMSAN warnings in p9_client_rpc and trace_9p_client_res paths.
Typical attack path
- Mount a 9p filesystem via legacy mount syscall
- Force early error return in p9_check_errors inside p9_client_rpc
- Trigger trace_9p_client_res which reads uninitialized req->rc.tag
- Observe kernel oops or memory disclosure from uninit value
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KMSAN reports for uninit-value traces referencing p9_client_rpc or trace_9p_client_res; inspect slab allocation paths around p9_tag_alloc during mount syscalls.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing the referenced commit on any system using the 9p protocol
- Audit 9p mount configurations and disable the protocol where not required
- Monitor kernel logs for KMSAN or slab-related warnings involving p9_tag_alloc

However, trace_9p_client_res() ends up trying to print it out anyway before p9_client_rpc() finishes. Fix this issue by assigning default values to p9_fcall fields such as 'tag' and (just in case KMSAN unearths something new) 'id' during the tag allocation stage.
