What it actually does
The vulnerability permits stored cross-site scripting by allowing JavaScript execution when PDF, XML, or SVG documents containing scripts are rendered in the browser context of other users.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could hijack user sessions, steal sensitive project data, or perform unauthorized actions within the issue-tracking system, disrupting team workflows and eroding trust in shared documentation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with contributor access uploads a document embedding executable JavaScript; when another user views or previews the file, the script runs with the victim's privileges, enabling data exfiltration or interface manipulation.
How to fix it
Upgrade Roundup to version 2.4.0 or later; sanitize or block script execution in uploaded documents until the upgrade is complete.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version is at least 2.4.0; attempt to upload test documents with benign script markers and verify they no longer execute; review changelog for the relevant fix.
Typical attack path
- Obtain low-privileged account on the Roundup instance
- Upload crafted PDF, XML, or SVG containing JavaScript payloads
- Trick or wait for a victim user to view the uploaded document
- Script executes in victim's browser to perform malicious actions
How to detect it
Search web server and application logs for unusual document uploads followed by rapid view events; inspect rendered pages for unexpected script tags or network callbacks to external domains.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade to Roundup 2.4.0 across all instances
- Temporarily restrict upload of PDF, XML, and SVG files or enable strict content-type filtering
- Monitor user reports of unexpected behavior in document views
- Review access controls to limit who can upload documents
The record
Roundup before 2.4.0 allows XSS via JavaScript in PDF, XML, and SVG documents.
