What it actually does

The vulnerability permits injection of arbitrary JavaScript into responses generated by the classhelpers template (_generic.help.html), enabling execution of attacker-supplied scripts in the context of other users' browsers.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations using Roundup for issue tracking face potential theft of session tokens, unauthorized actions performed on behalf of users, and erosion of trust in the tracking system until the software is updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a crafted parameter to the classhelpers endpoint that is not properly sanitized; when a victim loads the resulting help page the injected script executes, allowing theft of cookies or performance of actions within the application.

How to fix it

Upgrade Roundup to version 2.4.0 or later; if immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict access to the classhelpers functionality or apply input sanitization patches from the upstream project.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version is at least 2.4.0; attempt to reproduce the XSS condition with known test payloads in the classhelpers template and verify that scripts are no longer executed.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a Roundup instance running a version prior to 2.4.0
  2. Craft a malicious request targeting the classhelpers template with an XSS payload
  3. Trick an authenticated user into visiting the malicious link
  4. Script executes in the victim's browser to exfiltrate data or perform actions

How to detect it

Inspect web server access logs for unusual query parameters passed to help.html endpoints and review application logs for unexpected script tags or JavaScript execution events around the time of page renders.

What your security team should do

  • Upgrade all Roundup instances to 2.4.0 immediately given the public disclosure date
  • Review web application firewall rules to block common XSS patterns targeting help endpoints
  • Audit user permissions and session handling to limit impact of any successful script execution
  • Monitor for unusual script execution or cookie access in application logs

The record

In Roundup before 2.4.0, classhelpers (_generic.help.html) allow XSS.
