What it actually does
Race condition in Btrfs during concurrent fsync and size-extending write to preallocated extent allows overlapping EXTENT_DATA items with duplicate keys to be inserted into the log tree, triggering btrfs_set_item_key_safe BUG() and kernel panic.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes and reboots on Linux systems using the Btrfs filesystem, leading to service downtime, potential loss of in-flight data, and operational disruption until the kernel is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the race by performing simultaneous fsync calls and writes that extend into preallocated extents on a Btrfs filesystem; the logging path in btrfs_log_changed_extents then attempts to split an extent that already exists, hitting the duplicate-key assertion.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c993fd02ba471e296ca1996f13626fc917120158 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; test Btrfs workloads after upgrade.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit c993fd02ba471e296ca1996f13626fc917120158 via uname or kernel build info; reproduce the original race scenario under load and verify absence of the btrfs_set_item_key_safe BUG; monitor for duplicate-key assertions in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or process execution on a Linux system with Btrfs
- Create or open a file with preallocated extents straddling i_size
- Concurrently issue fsync/fdatasync while performing size-extending writes
- Trigger the log tree insertion that produces duplicate keys
- Cause kernel BUG and system crash or panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for 'btrfs_set_item_key_safe' BUG, 'duplicate keys', or 'BTRFS critical' messages referencing EXTENT_DATA items; examine stack traces containing btrfs_drop_extents, log_one_extent, and btrfs_sync_file.

- BTRFS critical (device
- kernel BUG at fs/btrfs/ctree.c:2620
- slot .* key .* new key .*
- btrfs_log_changed_extents
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Btrfs-using systems within the next patching cycle
- Add Btrfs fsync/write workloads to regression test suites
- Enable kernel crash logging and monitoring for btrfs critical messages
- Review and restrict local user access on multi-tenant systems until patched
