What it actually does
Data race between sk_psock_drop and sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue allows a NULL write to sk->sk_data_ready while a concurrent reader dereferences it, resulting in a kernel NULL pointer dereference.
Why it matters to the business
Local users or processes can trigger kernel crashes that render the system unavailable until reboot, disrupting services that rely on the affected Linux kernel networking paths.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local code execution opens and closes AF_UNIX sockets while BPF sockmap programs are attached; concurrent sendmsg and close operations trigger the unprotected saved_data_ready pointer access, causing the dereference and crash.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 505ce0630ad5d31185695f8a29dde8d29f28faa7 which adds sk_callback_lock protection inside sk_psock_data_ready.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 505ce0630ad5d31185695f8a29dde8d29f28faa7 or later equivalent; attempt to reproduce the original KCSAN data-race report with syzkaller or equivalent concurrency tests.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution on the target Linux system
- Load or attach BPF sockmap programs to AF_UNIX sockets
- Rapidly open, send on, and close sockets to race sk_psock_drop against sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue
- Trigger the NULL dereference and induce kernel panic or oops
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KCSAN reports or BUG messages referencing sk_psock_drop, sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue, or sk_psock_data_ready; correlate with process activity performing rapid AF_UNIX socket operations.
- BUG: KCSAN: data-race in sk_psock_drop / sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue
- sk_psock_stop_verdict net/core/skmsg.c:1257
- sk_psock_data_ready include/linux/skmsg.h:464
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing AF_UNIX sockets to untrusted local processes
- Monitor vendor and distribution advisories for backported fixes
- Apply kernel live-patching where available for high-uptime environments
- Restrict unprivileged local users from loading BPF programs until patched

Here is another different caller causing the same issue because of the same reason. So we should protect it with sk_callback_lock read lock because the writer side in the sk_psock_drop() uses "write_lock_bh(&sk->sk_callback_lock);". To avoid errors that could happen in future, I move those two pairs of lock into the sk_psock_data_ready(), which is suggested by John Fastabend.
