What it actually does

The vulnerability permits relative path traversal, allowing an authenticated user to supply crafted path sequences that escape intended directories and reach files outside the restricted web root.

Why it matters to the business

WordPress sites risk exposure or alteration of configuration files, uploaded content, or other sensitive data on the server, potentially leading to site defacement, credential theft, or further compromise.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker obtains a low-privilege WordPress account, then submits HTTP requests containing sequences such as ../ or %2e%2e%2f to directory parameters in core endpoints, bypassing path restrictions to read or write files outside the intended scope.

How to fix it

Upgrade WordPress to the latest stable release that resolves the path-handling issue in all affected branches (6.5.x, 6.4.x, 6.3.x and earlier). If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict file-system permissions, disable directory listing, and apply web-application firewall rules that block traversal sequences.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed WordPress version is newer than any listed affected release, then test core endpoints with known-safe traversal payloads while monitoring for blocked or sanitized responses.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain a WordPress account with at least subscriber-level access
  2. Identify endpoints accepting file or directory parameters
  3. Inject relative path traversal sequences into those parameters
  4. Observe responses that leak file contents or confirm write access
  5. Escalate by reading wp-config.php or other sensitive files

How to detect it

Inspect web-server access logs for requests to WordPress core paths that contain sequences such as ../, %2e%2e/, or encoded equivalents; correlate with authenticated user activity and unexpected file reads or writes.

  • GET or POST requests containing ../ or %2e%2e%2f to wp-admin or wp-includes endpoints
  • Access logs showing traversal patterns targeting wp-config.php or uploads directories
  • Unexpected file reads or writes logged by PHP or the web server after authenticated requests

What your security team should do

  • Apply the latest WordPress security update across all sites immediately
  • Review and tighten file-system permissions on the web server
  • Enable logging of requests containing path traversal patterns for ongoing monitoring
  • Audit active plugins and themes for similar path-handling weaknesses
