What it actually does

Allows authenticated users with contributor-level or higher privileges to inject persistent scripts via unsanitized input fields that execute in the browsers of other users viewing the stored content.

Why it matters to the business

Enables potential session hijacking, unauthorized administrative actions, and loss of site integrity on affected WordPress installations, increasing operational risk for site owners and users.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker logs in with low-privilege credentials, submits crafted content containing script payloads through editing interfaces, and the payload is stored in the database and executed when rendered for victims such as administrators.

How to fix it

Upgrade WordPress to fixed releases beyond the listed vulnerable ranges or apply the Debian package update to version 5.10.216-1 on affected linux (Debian:11) systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed WordPress or package version meets or exceeds the fixed release; attempt to submit test script payloads in input fields and verify they are neutralized on output.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain contributor or higher account on a vulnerable WordPress site
  2. Submit malicious input containing script tags through post or page creation interfaces
  3. Confirm the payload is stored without sanitization
  4. Lure or wait for a higher-privileged user to view the affected content
  5. Execute actions in the victim's browser context

How to detect it

Search web server access logs for repeated or unusual requests to post or page endpoints; query the database for script or HTML tags stored in post content fields; review audit logs for content changes by low-privilege accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the available package or WordPress update immediately
  • Audit contributor permissions and review recent content submissions for anomalies
  • Enable content security policy headers to limit script execution
  • Monitor logs for unexpected POST activity to content endpoints
