What it actually does
Circular lock dependency between hash table spinlocks and socket locks during MPTCP subflow diagnostic dumping leads to potential deadlock in inet_diag paths.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using MPTCP may experience kernel hangs or forced reboots when diagnostic or monitoring tools query socket state, disrupting network operations and availability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger diagnostic netlink queries (such as via ss or ss-like tooling) performs operations that acquire locks in the reverse order of the established dependency chain, causing the kernel to detect or hit the deadlock condition during subflow info retrieval.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 70e5b013538d5e4cb421afed431a5fcd2a5d49ee or later; for the 5.10 stable series use at least 5.10.212. Rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; avoid exposing diag interfaces to untrusted users until updated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the referenced commit or is at version 5.10.212 or newer; reproduce diagnostic queries under lockdep-enabled kernels and verify absence of the circular dependency splat; inspect /proc/version or uname output post-upgrade.
Typical attack path
- Establish or manipulate MPTCP connections on the target system
- Trigger inet_diag or sock_diag netlink messages that invoke tcp_diag_get_aux and subflow_get_info
- Acquire the hash lock (h->lhash2[i].lock) followed by the socket lock (sk_lock) in the reverse order of normal paths
- Induce the circular dependency leading to deadlock or lockdep warning escalation to system instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for lockdep splats mentioning k-sk_lock-AF_INET6 and h->lhash2[i].lock during inet_diag_dump_icsk or subflow_get_info; inspect netlink traffic to sock_diag for unusual diagnostic queries; check for hung tasks or soft lockups referencing mptcp diag paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing MPTCP or running diagnostic workloads within the next maintenance window
- Restrict unprivileged access to netlink diag sockets via LSM or capabilities until patches are applied
- Monitor for lockdep warnings in kernel logs on affected kernels
- Test MPTCP workloads with patched kernels before broad deployment
