What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in iommu_area_alloc during IOMMU table initialization for SR-IOV devices in kdump kernel on powerpc pseries when DDW property is used instead of ibm,dma-window.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel panic prevents successful kdump collection on affected powerpc LPARs using SR-IOV adapters, leading to loss of diagnostic data and potential extended downtime during crash recovery.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker triggers a kernel crash on a vulnerable pseries LPAR with SR-IOV devices; the kdump kernel then fails to initialize IOMMU tables from FDT DDW entries, causing NULL dereference on first DMA allocation attempt by drivers like mlx5_core.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix that initializes IOMMU tables from DDW properties stored in FDT for both dedicated and SR-IOV cases; update to fixed kernel versions that correctly handle dynamic and direct-mapped DDWs in kdump.

How to confirm the fix worked

Boot kdump kernel on pseries hardware with SR-IOV devices and confirm no NULL dereference occurs during mlx5 or similar driver probe; verify IOMMU table is populated from DDW in FDT before any TCE allocation.

Typical attack path

  1. Trigger kernel panic or kexec on target pseries LPAR with SR-IOV hardware
  2. kexec hands control to kdump kernel which scans FDT lacking ibm,dma-window for SR-IOV
  3. pci_dma_bus_setup_pSeriesLP creates uninitialized IOMMU table
  4. Device driver calls dma_alloc_coherent which reaches iommu_area_alloc on NULL table
  5. NULL pointer dereference causes Oops and kdump failure

How to detect it

Examine kernel logs for Oops with _find_next_zero_bit and iommu_area_alloc during early kdump boot; check FDT for presence of DDW without ibm,dma-window on SR-IOV devices.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching powerpc pseries kernels on systems using SR-IOV and kdump
  • Test kdump functionality end-to-end after applying the fix
  • Monitor for any future powerpc IOMMU changes in kdump paths

For the SR-IOV case, default DMA window "ibm,dma-window" is removed from the FDT and DDW added, for the device. Now, kexec hands over control to the kdump kernel. When the kdump kernel initializes, PCI busses are scanned and IOMMU group/tables created, in pci_dma_bus_setup_pSeriesLP(). For the SR-IOV case, there is no "ibm,dma-window". The original commit: b1fc44eaa9ba, fixes the path where memory is pre-mapped (direct mapped) to the DDW. When TCEs are direct mapped, there is no need to initialize IOMMU tables. iommu_table_setparms_lpar() only considers "ibm,dma-window" property when initiallizing IOMMU table. In the scenario where TCEs are dynamically allocated for SR-IOV, newly created IOMMU table is not initialized. Later, when the device driver tries to enter TCEs for the SR-IOV device, NULL pointer execption is thrown from iommu_area_alloc(). The fix is to initialize the IOMMU table with DDW property stored in the FDT. There are 2 points to remember: 1. For the dedicated adapter, kdump kernel would encounter both default and DDW in FDT. In this case, DDW property is used to initialize the IOMMU table. 2. A DDW could be direct or dynamic mapped. kdump kernel would initialize IOMMU table and mark the existing DDW as "dynamic". This works fine since, at the time of table initialization, iommu_table_clear() makes some space in the DDW, for some predefined number of TCEs which are needed for kdump to succeed.
