What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in the ttfLoadHDMX function during TTF font parsing, enabling memory corruption that results in application crash and denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Disruption to document rendering, publishing, or any workflow that processes font files, potentially halting operations until the affected component is restarted or replaced.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious TTF file that triggers the overflow when parsed by the vulnerable ttfLoadHDMX routine and supplies the file to any application using the affected texlive-bin code.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a patched version of texlive-bin that corrects the ttfLoadHDMX buffer handling; alternatively, disable processing of untrusted TTF files or sandbox font-handling components.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed texlive-bin version contains the fix for commit c515e, test parsing of known-good and boundary TTF files, and monitor for absence of crashes on crafted inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify target application that processes TTF fonts with texlive-bin
  2. Craft TTF file to overflow the HDMX table buffer
  3. Deliver the file via email, download, or shared storage
  4. Trigger parsing to cause heap corruption and DoS

How to detect it

Review application logs for segmentation faults or crashes during TTF parsing; inspect file upload or processing logs for unusual TTF files around the time of incidents.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all systems using texlive-bin and prioritize patching
  • Implement file-type sandboxing for font processing
  • Block or quarantine untrusted TTF files at email and web gateways
  • Add runtime monitoring for font parser crashes

The record

texlive-bin commit c515e was discovered to contain heap buffer overflow via the function ttfLoadHDMX:ttfdump. This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via supplying a crafted TTF file.
