What it actually does

The flaw permits arbitrary command execution when mpost is invoked via shell_escape_commands in texmf.cnf, due to insufficient input validation on included content.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control over affected systems processing untrusted documents, leading to data theft, system compromise, or service disruption; the vulnerability has been public for years with public exploits available, though prevalence remains low outside document-processing environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious TeX document that triggers inclusion of mpost through the shell_escape mechanism, causing the system to execute attacker-supplied commands during processing.

How to fix it

Upgrade cluster-autoscaler-fips-1.26 (Chainguard) to version 1.26.6-r2 or later; disable shell_escape_commands for mpost if immediate upgrade is not possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version meets or exceeds the fixed release; test document processing with known-safe inputs to verify shell escapes are restricted.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a service that processes user-supplied TeX or related documents
  2. Craft input that references or invokes mpost via shell_escape_commands
  3. Deliver the malicious document to the target system
  4. Trigger processing to execute arbitrary commands
  5. Establish persistence or exfiltrate data from the compromised host

How to detect it

Search application and system logs for unexpected invocations of mpost or shell commands during document processing; review process creation events tied to TeX-related binaries.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to the fixed package version across all deployments
  • Review and restrict shell_escape_commands in texmf.cnf configurations
  • Monitor for any document-processing workloads that accept untrusted input
  • Apply compensating controls such as sandboxing or input sanitization until patched

The record

TeX Live allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by leveraging inclusion of mpost in shell_escape_commands in the texmf.cnf config file.
