What it actually does
Successful exploitation allows a low-privileged network attacker to achieve full takeover of the MySQL Connector process, resulting in arbitrary code execution with impacts to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Why it matters to the business
Compromise of database connectivity components can expose sensitive data, disrupt application operations, and enable lateral movement within environments that depend on the affected connector, though the low exploit probability and lack of known campaigns reduce immediate operational urgency.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with limited credentials and network reachability identifies an application using an unpatched MySQL Connector/Python instance, crafts a specialized protocol interaction that triggers the flaw, and leverages the resulting code execution to assume control of the connector process.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected MySQL Connector/Python installations to a fixed release and, where the connector is consumed via github.com/juju/juju, update to the commit 0.0.0-20241001032836-2af7bd8e310b or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inventory all deployments of Connector/Python 9.0.0 and earlier, verify upgrade to a patched version, and confirm the juju dependency resolves to the listed fixed commit.
Typical attack path
- Obtain low-privileged network access to the target connector endpoint
- Identify the vulnerable Connector/Python version in use
- Send crafted protocol messages across supported transports to trigger the flaw
- Escalate the successful compromise into full process takeover
How to detect it
Review application and connector logs for unexpected process behavior or new outbound connections originating from the connector process; correlate with authentication events from low-privileged accounts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Connector/Python instances that accept untrusted network connections
- Apply the juju commit 0.0.0-20241001032836-2af7bd8e310b in dependent projects
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any change in observed exploitation
The record
Vulnerability in the MySQL Connectors product of Oracle MySQL (component: Connector/Python). Supported versions that are affected are 9.0.0 and prior. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Connectors. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of MySQL Connectors. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.5 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
