What it actually does
Unauthenticated network attackers can bypass authentication in MySQL Connectors (9.0.0 and prior) to perform unauthorized data modifications (update/insert/delete) and cause partial denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Leads to data integrity problems and service availability issues in database connectivity for dependent applications; low ecosystem prevalence reduces widespread operational disruption but still requires prompt attention due to easy exploitability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with network access sends crafted requests via multiple protocols to the vulnerable Connector/ODBC component, exploiting the authentication bypass to alter accessible data and trigger partial service denial.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected github.com/chaosblade-io/chaosblade (Go) installations to version 1.7.4 or later; additionally update Oracle MySQL Connectors to a version beyond 9.0.0.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm connector versions exceed 9.0.0, review patch notes for the fix, and perform connectivity tests to ensure no unauthorized modifications or partial service interruptions occur.
Typical attack path
- Scan for publicly reachable MySQL Connector instances
- Craft and send unauthenticated network requests over supported protocols
- Leverage the flaw to execute unauthorized data changes and induce partial DoS
How to detect it
Examine network and application logs for unexpected unauthenticated modification attempts or service degradation events tied to Connector/ODBC activity.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed version upgrade immediately
- Restrict network exposure of MySQL Connectors where possible
- Monitor for anomalous data access patterns in connector logs
The record
Vulnerability in the MySQL Connectors product of Oracle MySQL (component: Connector/ODBC). Supported versions that are affected are 9.0.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Connectors. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of MySQL Connectors accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of MySQL Connectors. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.5 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L).
