What it actually does
The vulnerability in the DDL component of MySQL Server allows a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a denial of service by causing the server to hang or crash repeatedly.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can disrupt database availability, leading to downtime for applications relying on the database and potentially halting operations until the server is restarted; the affected october/system package is widely used in downstream projects.
How an attack unfolds
A high-privileged attacker with network access sends specially crafted DDL statements via multiple protocols to exploit the flaw in the Server: DDL component, resulting in a crash or hang of the MySQL Server.
How to fix it
Upgrade MySQL Server beyond the affected versions 8.0.37 and 8.4.0; for the october/system package update to version 3.5.15 or later to address the exposure.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm MySQL Server versions are upgraded past 8.0.37 and 8.4.0, validate the october/system package is at 3.5.15 or newer, and test DDL operations under load to ensure stability.
Typical attack path
- Obtain high-privileged network access to the MySQL Server
- Connect using supported protocols
- Submit malicious DDL commands targeting the vulnerable component
- Trigger repeated server hangs or crashes to achieve denial of service
How to detect it
Examine database server logs for patterns of crashes or hangs immediately following DDL statements issued by high-privileged accounts; correlate with network connection records.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching the october/system dependency to 3.5.15 and MySQL to fixed releases
- Limit high-privileged network access to the database using least-privilege principles
- Enable monitoring for anomalous DDL activity and server instability
The record
Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DDL). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.37 and prior and 8.4.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
