What it actually does
Allows a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a hang or repeatable crash in the MySQL Server DDL component, resulting in complete denial of service with no impact on confidentiality or integrity.
Why it matters to the business
Database services can be disrupted causing unplanned downtime for applications that rely on the affected MySQL instances; low exploit probability limits widespread risk but privileged insiders or compromised admin accounts remain a concern.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker who already possesses high-privileged network credentials connects to the MySQL server over supported protocols and issues specially crafted DDL statements that exploit the flaw in the DDL handling code path, forcing the server process to hang or terminate.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected MySQL Server installations to versions later than 8.0.36 and 8.3.0; for pear/pearweb (GIT) deployments apply the fix present in commit 6447c174a6b4bd76d28ecca8543cbd24bf394f99.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running MySQL version is newer than the listed affected releases and test that the server remains stable under expected DDL workloads after the upgrade.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or compromise high-privileged MySQL account with network access
- Establish authenticated connection using multiple protocols
- Submit malicious DDL statements targeting the vulnerable code path
- Observe server hang or crash confirming denial of service
How to detect it
Review MySQL error logs and process crash dumps for unexpected DDL-related terminations around the time of reported outages; correlate with authentication events from privileged accounts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all internet-facing or multi-tenant MySQL deployments
- Review and reduce the number of accounts holding high privileges
- Monitor EPSS trend for any future increase in exploit likelihood
The record
Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DDL). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.36 and prior and 8.3.0 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
