What it actually does

The flaw permits a high-privileged network attacker to submit crafted DML statements that trigger an unhandled condition in the Server DML component, resulting in a hang or repeatable crash that terminates MySQL Server availability.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation produces immediate database downtime that halts dependent applications and services until the server is restarted, increasing operational costs and risk of data inconsistency during recovery.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses high-privileged network credentials connects to the MySQL instance over any supported protocol and issues a specially constructed DML statement; the malformed operation reaches the vulnerable DML code path and forces the server process to hang or exit, achieving a complete denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade MySQL Server to the latest supported release that resolves the Server DML issue; restrict network access to the database to only trusted clients; enforce least-privilege accounts and enable connection throttling where possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Compare the installed MySQL version against the affected range (8.0.34 and earlier); after patching, monitor process stability under representative DML workloads and review release notes to confirm the fix is present.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid high-privileged network credentials for the MySQL instance
  2. Establish a connection using any supported protocol
  3. Transmit a crafted DML statement that reaches the vulnerable code path
  4. Observe server hang or crash confirming denial of service

How to detect it

Correlate MySQL error logs and process termination events with spikes in DML statements from privileged accounts; watch for repeated server restarts or availability alerts that coincide with unusual query patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the latest MySQL Server security update as soon as it is available
  • Limit database network exposure to approved subnets and hosts
  • Review and reduce the number of high-privileged accounts with remote access
  • Enable enhanced auditing of DML statements from privileged users

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DML). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.34 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
