What it actually does

Memory corruption flaws that can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code within the browser process.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could gain full control over affected user systems, enabling theft of credentials, data, or installation of persistent malware across an organization.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or compromises a web page containing specially crafted content that triggers one of the memory safety bugs when rendered in an unpatched browser instance, resulting in arbitrary code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade all Firefox installations to version 123 or later as soon as possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Firefox version is 123 or newer; re-test with known memory-safety test cases or browser fuzzing tools if needed.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares malicious web content designed to trigger memory corruption
  2. Victim is lured to the attacker-controlled or compromised page via phishing or watering-hole tactics
  3. Browser processes the content and the memory safety bug is triggered
  4. Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution and establishes persistence or exfiltrates data

How to detect it

Examine browser crash reports, memory dumps, and EDR telemetry for unexpected crashes or code injection attempts originating from web content; review proxy logs for visits to suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous browser behavior.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize immediate deployment of Firefox 123 or newer across all endpoints
  • Monitor browser update compliance through endpoint management tooling
  • Review web proxy or EDR logs for unusual browser process behavior

The record

Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 122. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 123.
