What it actually does

Memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could achieve remote code execution on user systems, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or lateral movement; widespread Firefox usage amplifies organizational exposure and incident response costs.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious web content that triggers the memory corruption flaws when rendered in vulnerable Firefox. A victim visits the page, the browser processes the input leading to memory corruption, and with sufficient effort the attacker gains arbitrary code execution in the browser process.

How to fix it

Upgrade all instances of Firefox to version 120 or later as soon as possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed Firefox version is 120 or higher via about:support or equivalent; review crash reports and memory error logs for signs of attempted exploitation.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares and hosts malicious webpage exploiting memory safety issues
  2. Victim opens the page in Firefox version prior to 120
  3. Browser memory corruption occurs during page processing
  4. Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution within the browser context

How to detect it

Inspect browser crash logs and memory fault reports for indicators of corruption; correlate web access logs with unusual process behavior or unexpected code execution artifacts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy Firefox 120 or newer across all endpoints
  • Enable automatic browser updates to prevent future delays
  • Monitor for anomalous browser crashes or memory-related errors in endpoint logs

The record

Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 119. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 120.
