What it actually does

The flaw is a use-after-free condition on a MessagePort object that can be triggered to dereference freed memory, resulting in an exploitable crash.

How an attack unfolds

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to 120 or newer, Firefox ESR to 115.5.0 or newer, and Thunderbird to 115.5 or newer; apply the corresponding operating-system package updates when available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases, review release notes for the MessagePort fix, and test that previously crashing test cases no longer produce a crash.

Typical attack path

1. Host a malicious page that exercises MessagePort APIs in a sequence designed to free then reuse the object
2. Deliver the URL via phishing, compromised sites, or malvertising
3. Victim loads the page in an affected browser or Thunderbird preview pane
4. Use-after-free triggers a crash that the attacker attempts to exploit for arbitrary code execution

How to detect it

Inspect browser and Thunderbird crash reports for MessagePort references, look for sudden application terminations after loading untrusted content, and correlate with web-request logs that precede the crash.

What your security team should do

• Apply the version updates to all Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird instances as the highest priority
• Block or sandbox untrusted web content where possible until patches are deployed
• Enable automatic updates and monitor crash-reporting telemetry for MessagePort-related incidents
