What it actually does
Data race on CQP completion statistics in the irdma RDMA driver where non-atomic reads in irdma_wait_event and irdma_check_cqp_progress can observe inconsistent values while the completion thread performs updates, leading to potential load/store tearing.
Why it matters to the business
May cause unpredictable RDMA hardware initialization failures or incorrect completion tracking on systems using the irdma driver, increasing operational risk for high-performance networking workloads until systems are updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers concurrent CQP operations and completion handling paths on multi-CPU systems; the race is exercised during driver initialization or command processing, allowing observation of torn or stale statistic values that could be leveraged for further kernel instability.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit bf0f9f65b7fe36ea9d2e23263dcefc90255d7b1f or later stable releases containing the atomic variable change for CQP completion statistics.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of atomic operations on the completion statistics variable in irdma_sc_ccq_get_cqe_info and absence of KCSAN reports for the race after applying the update; recompile and test driver initialization under concurrent load.
Typical attack path
- Load or trigger the irdma kernel module on a multi-CPU system
- Initiate CQP operations that invoke irdma_handle_cqp_op concurrently with completion handling
- Observe or influence the non-atomic statistic updates reported by KCSAN
- Exploit resulting inconsistent state for denial of service or additional kernel attacks
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KCSAN data-race reports mentioning irdma_handle_cqp_op and irdma_sc_ccq_get_cqe_info; inspect for unexpected RDMA initialization failures or CQP command stalls post-boot.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing RDMA/irdma hardware within the CISA remediation window if applicable
- Monitor for KCSAN or lockdep reports involving irdma CQP paths until patched
- Restrict untrusted local access on systems running vulnerable irdma modules
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/irdma: Fix data race on CQP completion stats CQP completion statistics is read lockesly in irdma_wait_event and irdma_check_cqp_progress while it can be updated in the completion thread irdma_sc_ccq_get_cqe_info on another CPU as KCSAN reports. Make completion statistics an atomic variable to reflect coherent updates to it. This will also avoid load/store tearing logic bug potentially possible by compiler optimizations.
