A bug in certain older Qualcomm Wi-Fi chips can let specially crafted wireless signals cause the computer's network driver to read random memory, which might crash the machine or leak small amounts of data.

What it actually does
Missing length validation in ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx allows an undersized SKB (containing only an htc_frame_hdr) to be dereferenced as if it held a full WMI command header, resulting in reads of uninitialized kernel memory.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Qualcomm Atheros AR9271-class Wi-Fi chips may experience kernel crashes, memory disclosure, or unexpected driver behavior under crafted wireless traffic; however the low exploitability and lack of known campaigns keep overall operational risk modest.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a minimal 802.11 frame that reaches the ath9k HTC receive path with pkt_len set to a value (such as 8) that is valid for the outer header yet too small for the inner WMI payload; the unvalidated SKB is then passed to ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx, which reads beyond the initialized portion of the buffer.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that adds explicit pkt_len validation inside ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx before any access to the expected WMI header; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel on all systems using the ath9k driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the length check in ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx, recompile with CONFIG_ATH9K_DEBUG enabled, and replay Syzkaller-style packets that previously triggered the uninit-memory read; absence of KASAN/UBSAN reports indicates the fix is effective.
Typical attack path
- Send a specially constructed 802.11 frame targeting the vulnerable ath9k_htc_rx_msg path
- Force pkt_len to a value that passes initial HTC checks but leaves the SKB too short for WMI processing
- Trigger ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx to dereference the SKB data pointer into uninitialized memory
How to detect it
Look in kernel logs for ath9k or ath9k_htc stack traces referencing wmi_ctrl_rx, KASAN reports of uninitialized memory reads, or unexpected SKB length mismatches; correlate with wireless packet captures showing unusually small HTC frames destined for the WMI endpoint.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any hosts exposing the ath9k driver to untrusted wireless environments
- Monitor vendor or distribution advisories for backported patches even though EPSS remains low
- Consider disabling the ath9k module on systems where alternative Wi-Fi drivers are available
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: ath9k: avoid referencing uninit memory in ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx For the reasons also described in commit b383e8abed41 ("wifi: ath9k: avoid uninit memory read in ath9k_htc_rx_msg()"), ath9k_htc_rx_msg() should validate pkt_len before accessing the SKB. For example, the obtained SKB may have been badly constructed with pkt_len = 8. In this case, the SKB can only contain a valid htc_frame_hdr but after being processed in ath9k_htc_rx_msg() and passed to ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx() endpoint RX handler, it is expected to have a WMI command header which should be located inside its data payload. Implement sanity checking inside ath9k_wmi_ctrl_rx(). Otherwise, uninit memory can be referenced. Tested on Qualcomm Atheros Communications AR9271 802.11n . Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with Syzkaller.
