What it actually does

Missing NULL pointer check before accessing grp structure in ext4_mb_good_group allows kernel memory access on NULL grp, triggering panic.

Why it matters to the business

Unexpected system crashes and reboots on affected Linux systems can interrupt services and workloads until the kernel is updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to influence ext4 filesystem operations triggers ext4_mb_good_group with a NULL grp pointer, causing the corruption check to dereference invalid memory and crash the kernel.

How to fix it

Upgrade Linux kernel to version 5.10.195 or later, or apply commit 245759d987b617d183061db6ab8886ebb5cc78e9 in the stable tree.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version is at least 5.10.195; review ext4_mb_good_group source to verify NULL check precedes corruption validation.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local code execution or filesystem access on target system
  2. Trigger ext4 block allocation path that calls ext4_mb_good_group with NULL grp
  3. Kernel performs corruption check on NULL pointer and panics

How to detect it

Review kernel logs and dmesg output for NULL pointer dereference panics occurring in ext4 block group validation paths.

  • ext4_mb_good_group
  • NULL pointer dereference in ext4
  • kernel panic ext4_mb_

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades on all ext4-using systems within standard patch windows
  • Monitor for kernel panics referencing ext4 block allocation functions
  • Test updated kernels in staging environments before broad deployment

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: correct grp validation in ext4_mb_good_group Group corruption check will access memory of grp and will trigger kernel crash if grp is NULL. So do NULL check before corruption check.
