What it actually does

The flaw allows a sleeping function call (such as mempool_alloc during bio allocation) while holding an RCU read lock in dm_submit_bio for REQ_NOWAIT requests, violating RCU constraints and triggering a kernel BUG.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using device mapper may experience kernel panics or instability during direct I/O operations, leading to unplanned downtime for storage-dependent workloads.

How an attack unfolds

A local attacker opens a dm device with O_DIRECT, issues a preadv2 syscall with RWF_NOWAIT, and the kernel path in dm_submit_bio attempts a potentially blocking allocation under RCU protection, causing the scheduler to panic.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix in commit d7b2abd87d1fcdb47811f90090a363e7ca15cb14 and rebuild or upgrade to a kernel containing that change; reboot after installation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel git commit or version includes d7b2abd87d1fcdb47811f90090a363e7ca15cb14; attempt the provided test case and confirm absence of the BUG message.

Typical attack path

  1. Open /dev/dm-* with O_RDONLY | O_DIRECT
  2. Allocate aligned buffer and prepare iovec
  3. Call preadv2 with RWF_NOWAIT flag
  4. dm_submit_bio enters under RCU read lock
  5. bio_alloc_bioset triggers sleeping allocation
  6. Kernel reports sleeping function from invalid context

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the exact BUG string referencing sched/mm.h and dm-nowait process name; inspect crash dumps for RCU nest depth greater than zero during bio allocation in dm_submit_bio.

  • BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at include/linux/sched/mm.h:306
  • RCU nest depth: 1, expected: 0
  • dm-nowait

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching production kernels that use device mapper
  • Include the fix in the next scheduled kernel update cycle
  • Add the test case to regression suites for storage subsystems

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm: don't attempt to queue IO under RCU protection dm looks up the table for IO based on the request type, with an assumption that if the request is marked REQ_NOWAIT, it's fine to attempt to submit that IO while under RCU read lock protection. This is not OK, as REQ_NOWAIT just means that we should not be sleeping waiting on other IO, it does not mean that we can't potentially schedule. A simple test case demonstrates this quite nicely: int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { struct iovec iov; int fd; fd = open("/dev/dm-0", O_RDONLY | O_DIRECT); posix_memalign(&iov.iov_base, 4096, 4096); iov.iov_len = 4096; preadv2(fd, &iov, 1, 0, RWF_NOWAIT); return 0; } which will instantly spew: BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at include/linux/sched/mm.h:306 in_atomic(): 0, irqs_disabled(): 0, non_block: 0, pid: 5580, name: dm-nowait preempt_count: 0, expected: 0 RCU nest depth: 1, expected: 0 INFO: lockdep is turned off.
